Hi
For quickly transforming a few samples into something playable I really
liked specimen, which is now petri-foo, which now seems abandoned and
has some show-stopping issues here.
So I'm looking for an alternative, preferrably:
* does splits aka zones aka multi-samples
* configurable from GUI
* can read flac
* can save a "patch" in one file
* has basic synth capabilities (envelopes, filter, lfo)
* can "layer" samples
Any ideas?

Your requirements does not say if it has to be a standalone application
(like petri-foo) or if it can also be a lv2-plugin. In the latter case
you may take a look at Fabla¹ (see also Fabla 2.0²).

Note that Petri-foo is a "pitched sampler", while Fabla (and Fabla2) are
"drum samplers". The difference is in the mapping of keys, and if it
re-pitches samples based on MIDI key, or plays a different audio-sample.
Fabla and Fabla2 will probably not do what Atte is looking for.
OpenAV is intending on building a "pitch-sampler", however it will take
some time before its even in the design stage as there are a range of
projects currently in development here at OpenAV. Proper news updates of
projects and status soon.

Not sure if I understood you right, but in case you are looking for a
gui soundfont editor, swami may be worth a look:

You might want to consider Rui Nuno Capela's samplv1 :
http://samplv1.sourceforge.net/samplv1-index.html
It may miss some of the features you want though.
