I'm using debian unstable if that helps field some questions.
I use gcc 3.2.1 with gentoo. The offending option is "-std=c99" but I
can't imagine why debian's gcc doesn't understand it. The best I can
suggest is removing the option from src/Makefile.am and running the
autogen.sh script. Or just remove it from the Makefile itself.
