Sorry about this extremely naive question, but since this is my first time
trying to get linux to be a DAW I stumble onto some problems of course. And
my know-how is somewhat limited unfortunately.
My staudio c-port (envy 24 based 8 channel card analogue + 2 channel digital
from www.staudio.com with built in midi-interface) works as far as audio goes
now, but I can't seem to get anything out of the midiports even though it
seems to be properly recognized. Alsa Patch bay gives me a: Rawmidi: 0 -
Hoontech SoundTrack Audio DSP24 MPU-401 entry at least (actually 2 - one for
each midi port), but no matter which I choose in rosegarden or any other app,
I get no signal in the displays. How do I find out if it's working, and how
do I troubleshoot. If this is well documented somewhere and comprehensible
for semidummies, I'd be happy to receive a link!

You might look at aconnect. I think there is an option to list all the
MIDI devices/interfaces it knows about.

Seems as if your question is not so naive. I have exactly the same
problem, that is, midi not working, and I remember earlier postings with
this question, but no answers. I have posted a similar question to the
alsa users list some days ago, but got no answer up to now. Looks like
the midi driver is not working properly.

A nice trick when talking about midi into the computer is "cat dev"
where dev is the device in question. With my setup it would be
/dev/snd/midiC1D0 (Card 1, Device 1), but maybe you should start with
either /dev/midi00 or /dev/midi01 or /dev/midi0 or something like that.

Hi,
I have the same soundcard and similar problems with MIDI. My situation is:
MIDI outs are working, but not MIDI in. I think rosegarden is not the best
app for testing, since I have another MIDI device (SCD70 roland) that works
perfectly in all other apps but here also MIDI in (which is the 3rd device
on the SCD70) doesn't work. You might try muse instead or, to simply test
MIDI outs, pmidi. Returning to the C-Port, I guess ALSA get confused by the
fact that it has 2 outs and 1 in, and in fact I see (aconnect -lo) 2
devices listed as outs _but_ (aconnect -li) also 2 devices listed as ins,
even if the hardware has only 1 midi in. This could be the problem, but
don't trust me because I know nothing about ALSA in his deep. Also excuse
my english which is far more naive that your question ;-)

unite and ask on the ALSA devel ml instead (but my skills are not so

we really should do that. Now there are already four people having the
same problem with the ST Audio DSP 2000C, so it´s very likely that there
is a real problem with the alsa driver. At least we should ask the alsa
people to change the status of the card from "supported" to "partially
supported" :-(

check midi outs, the ins are no joy, last time i checked.
Can't check right now cause my h-bus cable is broken, so i'm waiting
for the replacement to arrive :(

There is an alsa test application that will report the
midi message types. Sorry, I can't remember where it's
at in the tree or its name. I've used is with
excellent results. Clemens brought it to my attention
in a LAU thread that would have included midiman 8x8.

OK I'm ready to do whatever is necessary (if I'm able ;)
The problem with alsa-devel is that is high traffic and also very tecnical,
but you can't post if you're not a subscriber. Maybe we should elect a
spokesman who subscribes to alsa-devel (please don't count me as
candidate - my english is insufficient) and keep others up to date (don't
know if it can be said for a person :P)

this, I doubt that there is any chance to have a fully working DSP2000C
within reasonable time. For me, there is no other choice than switching back
to Win ´98 and
Cubase VST and forgetting completely about sound under Linux, at least
for now.
As I said, if you really need the midi-ports you might be right. On the other
hand, midi-ports are cheap, most mainboards come with joystick-ports
nowdays... (perhaps not the same quality though).
In general it's more of a question of what apps you intend to be using. VST is
probably a more stable and more feature rich environment.
Linux-audio is still in what "suits" like to call, early adopter stage,
meaning that it's mainly applicable to people that really want to use it and
are prepared to jump through a few hoops to do it.
But we are going to change that, right? ;)

you are completely right, and I agree with you in principle. But the
DSP24 as the base of the DSP2000C has been marked as "supported" in the
sound card matrix since 2 years or so, even the ST Audio homepage says
it´s supported, and now suddenly the ALSA guys tell us it´s even
"untested". That´s what I call bad manners, at least. I never would have
bought the DSP2000C with this status.
FWIW, I´m a Linux user since 1994, as a Sysadmin I have moved the
network in our university institute from Novell to Linux, for everything
I do with a computer I use Linux (except music), so I am well aware of
the problems and am willing to be patient, but this is definitely not
the way I like it.

There is a test application which shows all received events in the
alsa-lib source package. Go to the alsa-lib/test/ directory, run
"make seq", then call it like "./seq decoder 64.0", where 64.0 is the
client/port number (you have to use a point instead of the usual colon
here).
However, MIDI input on that card is broken AFAIK.
