Hello, today I found in the dumpster this pc-keyboard which is neither
ps/2 or usb, but has these two connectors which to me seem midi game
and plain midi.

I connected the midi plug (purple) to my soundcard but it doesn't seem
to output any midi things (note on, off,cc etc.). Should it and it is
just broken or do these gaming devices use a midi physical port but an
entire different protocol than music-midi?

It's not using MIDI... it's just using the same standard DIN
connector that MIDI chose.
It is in fact a PS/2. IIRC, if you lop off that DIN
connector and solder on a newer PS/2 connector... they are
electrically equivalent.
No comment on the D-sub connector, though. :-)

uh yeah forgot to mention that I'd be using supercollider anyway, even
if this AT keyboard is not feasible and I end up using a usb keyboard
(got also one of those from the dumpster ;) ), to convert keystrokes in
note on,off etc.
So given that I'd use it for audio I'd use it only when I use the
soundcard and thus it would not be non-sense connecting the keyboard to
the soundcard

Renato,
There's a tutorial on the Arduino site that shows exactly how to "read"
characters from a PS/2 keyboard.
Keep in mind though, that not all keys can be pressed at the same time...
which may defeat the purpose of
building your controller...?
From the Arduino you could emit MIDI, (there's a
tutorial there somewhere in
the forums.. dont know exactly where)
but if your leaving it plugged into the computer, a serial connection, and a
little SuperCollider (or Python if it was my choice)
magic would sort out the MIDI in software...

hey, this actually seems a good idea. I was thinking of using the
arduino for a cheap drum kit - hacking code from here, if someone's
interested:

I think I could have enough code space to hook up those piezos to the
analog ins and the keyboard to the digitals.

it has an alsa midi interface and I think also a JACK midi one. But
actually doing the serial->MIDI conversion on the laptop might be
neater... I'll have to look into that, haven't done any serial
communication before

I'm not sure if your intrested, but since you want to go the serial route,
if you are using Python, I'll reccommend PySerial (guess what it does?)
as a really good library. IIRC there's another lib or way to do serial too,

The round 5-pin connector is old PC AT keyboard, the 9-pin D-sub
connector is serial mouse.
