Thanks - I'm currently writing a piece for SoS on Ron Parker's studio,
as its probably the first commercial studio to base its recording
work on a Linux system. Unless anyone knows of any earlier examples?
They needn't be an Ardour user - it could be some other critical audio
or MIDI application, but I'm trying to stick to commercial studios
rather than individual Linux users or project studios for this piece.
We know there are plenty of the latter two categories already on this
list...

How about the CCRMA studios at Stanford University? The relevance of Ron's studio to SoS readers is
that it might be
similar to the medium-sized independent studios they are used to
working in. The difference being Linux, of course...

person to ask. I though you were just looking for examples of linux
being used "for real".
Fortunately we have plenty of those!
The interesting thing about recording commercial clients (who are
paying by the hour to be there) is that the technology has to be
absolutely dependable - the client won't be interested in excuses if
it doesn't work. It's therefore a bit different from using it on your
own material, where workarounds and fixes are all part of the
learning curve.
From what Ron is saying, the Linux/Jack/Ardour
combination is almost
there, but not quite ready. He's got high hopes for it
though - and
by the time this article comes out (probably November issue or later)
we may well have ironed out those bugs. I personally hope to give it
a go shortly with the M Audio 1010, because we haven't been able to
get Audacity to do more than 5 simultaneous inputs to distinct tracks
so far.

Ardour seems to handle volume fine, though there are still a few glitch
bugs to iron out in beta2.

That's why they call it a beta! I'm careful not to exaggerate the
maturity of the Linux-based audio apps, when programs like Cubase
have had 15 years (or whatever) of development.
But at least the underlying system is stable - although we've had some
beta application crashes in the studio, I don't think I've ever had
to do a forced reboot or lost any saved data. There are plenty of
people still trying to make music on Windows 98...
