I have uploaded my first recording to
http://www.myspace.com/davidlcraig and am very
interested in what people here think. I played
into my Digitech GNX-3 and audio connected it to
my replacement Delta 1010. That is hosted in a
Netfinity server running Debian/Sid. I used Ardour
to resync the WAV files and then rerecorded the bass
part. Finally I editted out the count-in, exported
the mix to a WAV file, and used lame to encode the
MP3. All the effects come from the GNX-3. All the
tracks are uneditted--I don't believe in punch-ins.

This is really nice stuff..
Just a couple of things that would make it even better:
1) Get some better drums! That 80s beat box sound is not right
for this AT ALL!!
2) I am not sure if it is just the myspace bandwidth or
something, but the sound is really compressed, sounds like it is
coming out of a cheapo radio. I am no expert on how to do this,
but it really needs "opening out" Maybe the EQ the top end up??
But really amazing. Really great playing!

Thank you for the kind words. The drums are part of the
GNX-3's toolkit and, yes, they are pretty rudimentary.
I tried hydrogen some time ago but couldn't get it to
work in the 7/4 meter. Maybe it handles that now. But
since I recently inherited a Pearl drumkit, I should
really record them when I get a round tuit. I'll think
about the EQ. I need to figure out how to patch Jamin
into the various outputs.

Just an addendum to my last note.. I heard the mp3 on your site,
and it is much better in terms of sound. I think it still could
do with "opening out" a little more, but that is probably just
me.

Hey cool, notice you are in Montgomery Village... I'm just up in
Germantown. Good to know there are other Linux audio enthusiasts in
the area!
Good guitar playing on your track... What are you using for the drums?
They sound a bit thin. Have you ever tried using Hydrogen?

Really, really nice playing! As a fellow guitar player I always really enjoy
hearing others' work.
I echo what others have recommended about the percussion and "filling out"
the mix, however I didn't feel that anything stood out as a flaw such that
it gets in the way of enjoying listening to you play. I also felt that the
bass could be brought up a bit.
As a first effort, I think you did an outstanding job.

Thank you for listening and for the encouragement. As I'm
sure you know, we always are aware of the imperfections in
our playing. I recorded all the tracks straight through
with no editting or punch-ins since I prefer a more live
and human sound. But that makes it clear I'm no studio
musician. See my earlier posts about your suggestions.

Nice track, and Kudos to you for working live. I try to do that mostly
(but have been known to cheat).
