To play soundfonts, would you go for a soundcard that
can load them into
its own RAM or for another solution ?
Try FluidSynth. It's a midi softsynth that loads SF2 font libraries. I think Timidity
can load SF2 fonts as well, but I've only used it for GUS patch sets.

TiMidity works beautifully with SF2 fonts. Here's my current
timidity.cfg :
soundfont /home/dlphilp/soundfiles/sfonts/FluidR3_20GM.SF2
That's all it needs...
