Hi
I'm building a live performance using chuck. We need to have both click
+ the actual audio produces, routed to either a headphones mixer or the
PA. I could of source live with mono and pan the click to one channel
and the music to the other, but stereo is better...
The problem is twofold:
1) Can I link the onboard soundcard and an usb soundcard so that they
appear to the system as one four channel device?
2) Can I address each of these outputs (or sets of stereo outputs) from
chuck?
BTW: I don't need super low latency and I only need playback. The laptop
is gonna be an IBM x61 running ubuntu and the usb card is an Edirol UA-1A.

But you need stability. And you won't get stability with that setup. Please
ask the archives why linking two soundcards without syncing them with
sample-accuracy is _never_ working. (You can search for my name, I have
written about this several times.)
But you could 'sync' two pc's via midi-mtc or mmc. That could be sufficient
for performance.

Arh, that's a good idea. Even simple osc should do the trick. I'll try
that route when time comes!

i think that this is only theoretically possible if you create an
.asoundrc file, but it will not work because the cards are not synced,
so they will always play asynchronously.

As other have already written, the clocks of different sound cards will
not run at exactly the same rate in the general case.
However, USB audio devices that use 'adaptive' output endpoints derive
their clock from the USB clock, so it is possible to use multiple USB
devices at the same frequency without their clocks drifting apart.
(The UA-1A, like most other USB audio devices, does use adaptive output
endpoints.)
This still doesn't guaranteee sample-accurate synchronisation because
it's possible that one device is started one frame (1 ms) later than the
other.

If you want to do this more often I'd consider to get a 6-channel out
USB card. Some simple ones are cheap (the Terratec Aureon USB is about
50 Euro), better ones aren't that expensive, either.

Don't be so sure about that. Could be that the PA-mix will be mono. Quite a
lot live-mixes are mono! The only thing I do in stereo are effects and cd
when I am the tech...
