i've pretty much given up on getting my m-audio
quattro working under linux. it works so well under
windows, and so well priced. oh well.
does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement
card that works well under both windows and linux?
requirements:
alsa driver
asio driver (for windows)
at least 4in/4out analog
MIDI in/out
usb or firewire (i've got a laptop)
moderately priced
i was looking at the m-audio firewire 410, which
looked like it would be great. does this work w/
linux?

i've pretty much given up on getting my m-audio
quattro working under linux. it works so well under
windows, and so well priced. oh well.
The quattro is reported to be functional under Linux. I myself
use usb audio in Linux (a 2-channel Edirol UA-5) with no problems. The
alsa driver is the very same for all usb audio device. My experience with
Linux usb has taught me to only hotplug the audio device, meaning: never
boot the machine with the usb device on. With your modules.conf and
.asoundrc well configured, always boot the machine without the usb device
and only after all is up and running turn on the audio interface. Wait a
minute and the card should be on on its own. It won't show on the oss
emulation mixers, but jack, audacity and such should be able to see it
under the appropriate device (hw:X or /dev/dspX).

there are a _lot_ of problems with the quattro under linux ... i
can't
recommend it at all!

only remember a handful of success reports.

I can not confirm such problems. I almost always boot with an Edirol UA-1X
connected. (Using DeMuDi with a 2.6 kernel.)

Well, we cannot do a afull market research for you, so if you could
find some models you like yourself first, it's will be easier to get
some reports if those are working here.
Anyway, the only 4/4 USB1 device I know besides the Quattro is the
Audiotrak Maya 44. It doesn't have midi, but this shouldn't be a real
problem, as you can either get a seperate usb/midi thing (cheap) or
buy a midi controller which also supports USB (a bit more expensive,
but if you don't have a controller yet, it's a good deal.)

The Hardware: The software:
Dell inspiron 5100 Gentoo ~x86
P4 2.4 kernel 2.6.8.1 ingo molnar's VP patch 09
640mb ram kernel 2.6.11-rc4 ingo molnar's RT patch
40gb 7200rpm jackd version 0.99.50
ati radeon m9 alsa lib/drivers 1.0.8
edirol ua-25 USB interface FS filesystem
The problem/experience:
I'm able to get good low latency performance from kernel 2.6.8.1 ingo
molnar's VP patch 09 as described

20Success but with 2.6.11-rcX I'm unable to get any kind of decent low
latency performance. Tons of "subgraph timeouts" and "delay of X usecs
exceeds..." plus lots of XRUNS. Making the usb IRQs unthreaded in
2.6.11-RT has no effect. At -p 1024 -n 2 jackd runs pretty well, but
there's no way I can touch -p 124 -n 3 that I get with 2.6.8.1-VP.
The Question:
Has ANYONE had success with 2.6.11 and low latency USB? I don't want to
keep bashing my head against this if it's just "not ready yet".
Also a quick tip:
Many of my devices were piled up on IRQ11 (I realize this is not the
horrible issue it once was) and I could find no way of getting things
moved around (it's a laptop so no card shuffling) and went through a TON
of kernel boot options to no effect... till I found acpi_irq_balance.
I went from this:
11: 3376988 XT-PIC uhci_hcd, uhci_hcd, uhci_hcd, ehci_hcd,
ohci1394, radeon@pci:0000:01:00.0 0/76988
To this:
9: 245868 XT-PIC acpi, radeon@pci:0000:01:00.0

Maybe it's a psychological effect but low-latency audio seems a bit more
stable now.
BTW, I recommend the edirol UA-25 to anyone looking for USB with phantom
power, mic pres and midi. (as with any USB device, be prepared to tweak
to get performance).

I had. I am getter performance than ever before with vanilla 2.6.11 and
csound5 (latency =5.8ms). This is without jack, or anything fancy,
simply csound controlled in realtime by usb-midi keyboards,
