Good morning
"What happened in the middle?" is the title of my RPM Challenge entry.
For the uninitiated, the RPM Challenge is an annual motivation album
writing event with a simple rule: write and record 10 songs (or 35 minutes
worth) of music in the month of February.
This was my first time taking part and I was happy enough with the results
to release it as my debut album on Bandcamp: http://stuzz.bandcamp.com
All sounds were recorded with a recent svn of Ardour3
All drums were programed with Hydrogen using the GCSW-2 kit for all but
"Let It Slide", where I used the Big Mono kit.
As usual with Bandcamp, you can stream the lower quality audio, or if you
Buy Now for $0 or above, you can choose the quality you want, all the way
up to FLAC.
It's a bit rock, a bit metal, and a few other things. My favorite songs
are 04-Around You, closely followed by 09-From the Flames.
The album is released under a Creative Commons CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.
Hit me up if you want to know any details about the putting together of
the album. Comments, suggestions and anything else is also welcome and
encouraged.

Hi Stuzz!
I'm still listening to your album and I must say: Wow! I like the production
quite a lot, same of course of the guitar playing. this is so reminiscent of a
few good metal bands I know, where the sound is concerned.
I must say however, that my absolute favourite is "I know how it ends". But
sometimes it's difficult to decide, since you really crossed over a couple of
times. :-) the obscene is very lovely too. I like the almost meditative or
translike quality to it. Stepped on and scorned has a very lovely 70s feel to
it. The funky influence, that I perceive in it, appeals to my clavinet-loving
nature. :-) The very small electronic internezzo is fantastic, not to say
hilarious. :-)
If I had to point to an odd one out, I'd really say, that this would be "Let
it slide". I was surprised to find something as jazzy amidst the rest. I
couldn't say, finding something so light hearted surprised me, because there
are a few, which strike me as light.
I can see, why you would like from the flames so much. Pitty, that you
couldn't growl to it a little, that would have made it even more perfect. Very
good playing there. Very precise. That is something that struck me in all the
pieces, you precision. It is refreshing to hear, that these things are
possible outside commercial bands. Hm, perhaps they are even more common than
I might think. But I didn't find a lot of small amateur production metal and
even less of that came close to being good. So and now I wait to stand
corrected or being stoned for my ignorance. :-)
the only thing, that is a pitty about the production, is that you always
moved your vocals so far into the background. Less reverb, probably highpassed
and the vocals more up to the front, would have done them good. Well, it won't
stop me from liking it and listening again and telling my best friend, who is
the real metal-head in our relationship. :-) I'm sure he will enjoy it even
more. thanks for sharing this, I hope, that we might hear a little more of
that throughout the year. Would be a pitty, to wait for the next RPM. I'd be
interested to hear, what you come up with, when you have more time to work on
one piece. Perhaps it might get even more prog metal. Did I mention, that I
love prog, not only in rock?

tht you are blind as well and probably stick to the text-based browsers. Hm,
these days we seem to be swarmed with blind users. :-)

From the Flames was 2nd to Around You. Overall on the whole album I was
most critical about the vocals, and I was most happiest with the vocals on
Around You and in general, it's loud and soft dynamics. From the Flames
ended up with my favorite riff... the one I eventually sing "It won't
happen again" over (that's why I repeated it so often :)) Don't get me
wrong though, I like all the songs in there own way. Growling is on my
list of things to work on.
the only thing, that is a pitty about the
production, is that you
always moved your vocals so far into the background. Less reverb,

Really great stuff! Haven't listened to all of them yet but I'll
comment anyway :)
Great guitar recording, both chops and sound. Podded guitars?
I wasn't sure if the drums were actually programmed for a while (a
very good indication) sadly the hihat is a give away, it's just way
too static.
To think that you managed to record all this in one month :)
If I would critique anything it would be vocals, there is too much
room in the recording and it seems to lack high frequencies (though my
hearing is more impaired than normally, saw Immortal live last night
hehe) The vocals on the metal stuff would definitely have been better
with pushing your voice harder.. it gets a bit sore after that
though... ;)

would have been some re-recording and refinement. I didn't know the words
either, and I know from hearing other singers, the performance is a damn
site better if they don't need to read sing :)
I'm not quite sure that you mean by 'there is too much room in the
recording'. Could you elaborate please? I would suggest the lack of high
frequencies, or just general lack of any other good stuff would be due to
the sub-quality microphone I currently own. That's the next part of my
setup which will get an upgrade. I agree that some more gritting vocals
are called for on some songs too. By and large this is the first proper
vocal recording I've done, so with any luck I'll get able to get somewhere
close to how I want them to be with some more work.

Hehe, since I'm lyric impaired I don't know what you mean, I always
have to read what to sing :)

What I meant is that I can hear either echoes from the room you
recorded in or deliberately added reverb for a smaller room, either
way I think it would improve without it.
Probably you are recording in a quite small room that has poor sound insulation.

I found the guitar sounds awesome :-) Crystal clear, specially the
clean ones. Did you use any special audio-fu?

Couldn't you re-record them? Maybe with a bit of processing you would
be able to get them where you want :-?

No audio-fu that I'm aware of. I added extra reverb to the 'solo' guitar
bits most of the time, but other than that there was no post-processing on
the guitar sounds.
Regarding the vocals, as the album was for the RPM Challenge, to finish it
in time I had no time to re-record the vocals. There's some processing on
them, but I'm inexperienced in vocal processing (or any processing really)
to be able to do anything special to them.
