Hi everyone - thanks for being there. From what I've read, this seems like a very
knowledgeable thread, so I hope someone can help with this...
I upgraded from ubuntu studio Feisty to studio Gutsy recently, and although everything
sound-wise is working fine (i.e. all system sounds and non-jack dependent audio programs
are working fine), I can't get jack to work with my sound card.
The sound card is an EMI 2| 6 (usb) - alsa picks it up, and I can select 'alsa' as
my system sound device with no problems.
starting jackd -d alsa gives this:
loading driver ..

The accompanying /var/log/syslog records this:
Dec 2 01:44:32 ubuntu kernel: [ 7766.542118] cannot submit datapipe for urb 0, error -28:
not enough bandwidth
I have read around the place that kernels up to 2.6.20 had usb bandwidth allocation which
might have caused this, but I'm using what ubuntu calls 2.6.22-14-rt. So I
shouldn't be getting bandwidth errors. Especially when the previous kernel worked
fine with the same physical configuration of usb socket + sound card.
Plus, audacity seems to be able to achieve simultaneous stereo playback and capture. So
it can't be beyond the capacity of the alsa driver...
Any ideas? I'm not averse to the idea of compiling a new kernel, but I'd want to
be sure that is where the problem is before getting into it....

Are you sure jack is trying to use the USB card? my USB cards have never been

Yes - when I first installed feisty studio, I had to turn off the internal
sound card in the bios, because it was causing problems - so the system only
finds the USB audio.
Maybe I should try turning the internal sound card back on - although I'd be
surprised if the fact that a usb card was designated as hw:0 should cause
any problems.

more information, in case this helps anyone come up with a solution:
I can toggle between hw:0 and hw:1 by setting the 'index' option on
snd-usb-audio in my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. Depending on which of these
I select, jack offers me hw:0 and hw:0,0 or hw:1 and hw:1,0 as my two
choices in the hardware dialogue. Doing aplay --list-pcms gives this:

I have no idea, but it seems like some people have it rocking, and
have asked questions about xruns, so they're at least a little farther
than you are at the moment:

I really don't know, though. Do you have devices hw0:1? I'd do some
extensive fiddling with jackd in the command-line (my preference with
trial-and-error bullhooey) Also, this seems like a problem:
ALSA: cannot configure playback channel
cannot load driver module alsa

BIOS makes no difference to Linux whatsoever - Linux still finds the
card and installs support for it.
Perhaps it depends on which integrated sound chip is there?

The first 'error' message is possibly significant - (though I know
nothing about USB soundcards) 16 periods sounds rather large.

SOLVED!! (well, sort of)
I did what I should have done in the first place - commented out every line
in .asoundrc (including the one with a link to .asoundrc.asoundconf, so the
system wasn't seeing alsa's default settings, then set everything in
qjackctl to 'default'. At first, I was getting a complaint that I was using
th plug layer, but that seems to have gone away now as well.
Only problem is that qjackctl sometimes makes the toolbars vanish when you
roll the mouse over them... but then I can always run jackd from a command
line launcher.
The moral is: let the kernel sort it out.
