Are usb devices a decent option for recording and playback? How about
both at the same time? I am thinking of going laptop but would like
to get better sound than is available in most. USB is then only
option. Would the latency be noticable to me or listeners of my
recordings?
Which USB devices are best wrt Linux compatibility? Is MAudio good here too?

Yes. Theoretically 12MBit are enough to work with 8 channels
simultaneously.
1 Stereo in and 1 Stereo out works great.

My cheap Terratec card currently runs @ 40msecs latency which is

much, but I hope to improve this one day.
I was told that other people got 10msecs on Edirol USB devices.

AFAIK the Edirol devices usually work really out of the box, I
don't know anything about m-audio (except the Midisport 8x8 which
works great for me).

I saw a Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro for CAD$40. Anyone got it
to work in Linux? I tried to search it on http://qbik.ch/usb/devices/,
but couldn't find its entry. AFAIK, Turtle Beach is a company famous
for good sound cards. Any words on this little thing's quality?

If it works without a separate driver in Windows or OS X, it'll work
in Linux, too. If not, it might be easy to add a workaround to the
driver.

A headphone amplifier usually reduces quality.

No problem. There are devices that have some restrictions, i.e., they
can do duplex at 48 kHz but not at 96 kHz.

Depends on what you're trying to do. The USB protocol introduces an
additional latency of about one or two milliseconds, compared to PCI
cards.

Freebob can support many cards, but the current implementation

The drivers are still considered alpha quality though so if you need the
support now it's not the best solution.

I'm yet to get around to test it but some

Well, to be honest, if I knew that there will be permanent
support and work on the drivers I'd buy one and contribute by
testing. I still have my USB card working so I'd not depend
on it.

Firewire is good, Audio via Firewire is bad. You have to use USB or PCI or the
RME's own Interface...
