There are some issues with video cards and sound:
* First of all I want the video card to be quiet!
I do not need the fastest and hottest one...
* I guess, onboard grafics are problematic, as they don't have separate RAM.
Memory operations could be slowed down in applications. Is this true?
Are there other sound related issues I should be aware of,
when choosing a video card?

There are a few but most people are happy with Nvidia(closed source
drivers) or ATi(open source drivers). Your more likely to have problems
with your mobo and your video card.

Apparently upon the beginning of the barrage, the donkey broke
discipline and panicked, toppling the cart. At that point, the rockets
disconnected from the timer, leaving them strewn around the street.
Tethered to the now toppled cart, the donkey was unable to escape before
the arrival of U.S. troops.

I do not need the fastest and hottest one...
I think you specifically said no on-board chips, but I just wanted to
stick up for the one I recently got. It's an Intel 845. It dynamically
allocates RAM so as not to waste it. Performace is as good as my
NVidia, but with MUCH less hassle for setup and drivers. It just
works. XV, DRI, GL, 3D accel and all. Very happy. And no, no cooling
fan.
Perhaps also worth mentioning, the onboard audio (intel8x0) is
surprisingly good too. Much better sound than previous onboard chips
(cmipci and via). Also has SPDIF. Unfortunately, although it supports
MIDI, there is no connector on the board for it.

If you want 2D performance rather than 3D, try a Matrox. Mine supports
dual DVI or analogue, has no fan, and the 2D display is really crisp.
I think it's a G550.

I've been pretty happy with my old Matrox G400. No fan so it's silent,
and it's plenty fast for everything except openGL games. It's
tolerable for quake3 but not really competitive.
I've tried replacing it twice, with a Sapphire (powered by ATI) radeon 9200
and a Geforce 440MX, both are pretty cheap fanless cards, but
I had serious stability problems with both (the 440MX would always
hang on boot). Might be a motherboard issue, my board isn't very current
either (Tyan Tiger 230).

I like the G400, too. It runs dual-head using xinerama, which is
great for laying out lots of screen space with ardour, jamin,
envy24control, qjackctl, etc.
And best of all, I got it for free when my son upgraded his video game
machine last year. :-)

I like the G400, too. It runs dual-head using xinerama, which is
great for laying out lots of screen space with ardour, jamin,
envy24control, qjackctl, etc.
And best of all, I got it for free when my son upgraded his video game
machine last year. :-)
