I use blackbox anyway because I like the minimal approach to things (I
use openwindows at work not cde for example).
As for the RADAR - I always loved that system, BeOS is my favourite (no
flames please!) OS anyway for audio.
As for the network drive - its because I have two workstations, I need
to transfer data across.
I only started this up because I wanted a multitrack only PC - so just
to be able to switch on PC and after 20s see ardour without touching
anything else would be great!

the kde login manager allows for "automatic logins". a horrible feature
from a security POV, but together with kde's session management, it will
do just what you want. 0 points out of 10 for resource husbandry, though

Yep, but
the fine thing with kdm and gdm, and with my favourite
wdm as well, is that they also can login the user with a plain
~/.Xsession login. So an Xsession file with:
#! /bin/sh
exec blackbox &
exec ardour
will let the user login and play with ardour, until that is closed (or
crashes...) after which the user is logged out again.
