Unless you don't mind debugging, a USB card may
not be what you are
looking for for a few more months yet.
I don't necessarily mind debugging, but I don't want that to be a huge
timesink. It doesn't sound like Linux is quite ready for USB audio.
Since USB is not a deal breaker for me, I can live with non-USB
options.
How many channels do you need?
Four would be nice. I'm easy!

4 channels in what format? The 9636 (I have this card) is 18 in - 18 out.
Possibly it's more than you need. It's also ADAT/spdif only. What are you
interfacing to externally?
I also use an Audiophile 2496. That's 4 in - 4 out for about $150-$175.
Two analog and two s/pdif. It's a nice little card.
When you think channels, don't forget at least two output channels to
drive speakers.
I am using both AMD and P3 machines. They both work fine. I use AMD for
my PTLE/Win ME machine. (Using Asus.) It works fine.

BTW: I also have an Audiophile, but no digital gear, so I never used
S/PDIF. But would it be possible to use analog and digital out
independently so that one has in fact a card with 4 outchannels?

As far as I know it is possible. I have not gotten quite that far with
Ardour yet, but here's my basic plan for the AP2496 and RME Hammerfall in
tandem:
1) AP2496 audio out - speakers
2) AP2496 audio in - no immediate plan
3) AP2496 s/pdif out - general purpose digital send
4) AP2496 s/pdif in - clock to sync with RME
5) RME s/pdif out - clock to sync with AP2496
6) RME s/pdif in - hook to Pod Pro s/pdif out
7) RME 16 ADAT digital channels - general purpose in/out to external gear.
We'll see if it works! I don't have a clue (yet) about how to tell the
AP2496 to get it's clock from the s/pdif port instead of it's own crystal.
We'll see...

envy24control has a "Hardware Settings" tab, where you can select
S/PDIF as a Master Clock.
Midi works fine on the Audiophile, btw.

I think it was the older VIA chipsets, I've just got an AMD with VIA
DDR333 chipset, and it seems fine, apart form the fact that I cant rip cds
with the onboard controller.
IMHO you get the best float performance per buck with AMD, but if you want
decent ram bandwidth you are stuck with VIA chipsets.
