Hello!
There is a new level meter called "ameter" : it is an
Alsa plugin and is intended to be usable with all Linux
audio programs that don't have meters, and that cannot connect to
Jack/Meterbridge. Examples : Glame, Mplayer...

Hi
I tried it. It's a little bit unstable (the config window sometimes disappears) but
useable.
But is there a way or a plan to make it work the same way as vumeter (based on esd). I
mean a stand-alone app, simply listening to audio input or output?
I record actually with ecasound, but really miss a nice vu-meter app to see the peaks.
Actually, I use a pipe between nrecord (wav record with ncurses vu-meter) and lame
(translate the wav in mp3 immediatly). If anyone is interested by the details, email-me.
It works very well, but I don't like the ncurses look.
BTW, replacing nrecord with arecord+ameter in my script break the pipe and hang up the
sound device. First I can't close the ameter window (with icewm as a wm) and I must do
a ctrl+C in the aterm invoking ameter (arecord -D ameter | lame -r -m m something.mp3). I
can't launch it a second time, or try a "aplay something.wav", it complains
that the snd_pcm_open failed.
Even if I restart alsasound, no way... I have to reboot to make the sound work as usual!

mdk 8.2 + alsa 0.9rc6

You could try jack.

Thanks for the advice. Should I say that jack frightens me? I read l-a-u mailing list
since monthes (years maybe) and have tried installing lot of tar.gz. Lots were unsuccesful
attemps and some were succesful (ecasound, alsa-driver) but so much _time_ fighting
with... dependencies' hell! I'm really looking for standalone apps, not a big
thing as jack seems to be, even if it seems really nice. To put an analogy, I find KDE
really full-featured, but I prefer small apps (gtk by taste). Don't take it bad, I
just wanted a _nice_ vumeter, but I can stay with nrecord as it worked out of the box.

Errh ... Mdk 8.2. And I have picked some random RPMs from Planet CCRMA: I can't help
myself trying ;) . Some work and some don't, and it can be because of some gnome2 or
libpng libs I don't have.
Either way jack is worth installing.

Have you tried the new ecasignalview...? There's a screenshot of it at:

Well , no, as an alsa plugin , it needs the audio device to be opened by
another program.

I'll try to reproduce this problem .
As I didn't remember the exact scrips I deleted, I wrote a new one. And it seemed to
work without soundcard-locking. I surely have done something weird, but don't know...
Anyway the pipe get broken by something in the script and replaced by a huge .wav file,
which is what I wanted to avoid, using a pipe.
Here is the script:
# automaticly save the last record in case of
mv -f ~/Last_record.mp3 ~/Before_last_record.mp3
# launch ecasound on a pipe (tmp.raw)
ecasound -i ~/Progs/Enregistrement/tmp.raw -o ~/Last_record.mp3 &
# then launch a terminal (should be removed, but needed to stop the recording with a
ctrl+c).
# arecord write to the pipe (tmp.wav)
rxvt -geometry -0-0 -e arecord -f cd -D ameter ~/Progs/Enregistrement/tmp.wav
# tmp.raw is a pipe pointing to tmp.raw. Should be manually created before everything.
I still can't close the ameter window, and as I don't know a better way to stop
arecord, I do a ctrl+c in the terminal where it runs. Then, on the screen, the following
line is repeted a lot of time:
arecord: pcm_meter.c:546: snd_pcm_meter_hw_free: Assertion `err == 0' failed.
Aborted...
with this line at the end:
Erreur de segmentation
("segfault" in english I believe). It doesn't clutter the screen this way
when I just do a "arecord -f cd something.wav".
On my machine, pcm_meter.c is located here:
alsa-lib-0.9.0rc6/src/pcm/pcm_meter.c
and the line # 546 shows:
assert(err == 0);
Anyway it's working :)
And for the strange "config window disappearing" commentary... My fault, I
confused myself with a vu-meter plugin for xmms I was trying at about the same days. What?

Ok , i understand better now! You can avoid the ctrl-c segfault in
arecord ( which could be fixed in some days),
by using the -d switch (duration in sec.) , if you initially know the
recording time :
arecord -D ameter -d 60 soundrec.wav

I have the following error compiling meterbridge-0.9.0 on Mandrake 9,
with jack-audio-connection-kit-0.34.0 installed
( it was ok with meterbridge-0.0.6)
Would we need Jack cvs version ? (I can't try , as I have errors
compiling jack cvs )
