SoundCrab comes as a .so file, a native Linux DLL. It is called by its
maker a VST, so I tried it with the VST host included in AVLinux,
'vsthost'. It gives the below. I have tried copying soundcrab.so to
/usr/local/lib/vst, but there was no change in result. What is the best
method to use?

Very few hosts support those Linux VSTs, besides jost lmms might work,
but I doubt there are more options than that.

It's a native *Linux* VST, not a native Windows VST plugin. You'll need
a host such as JOST or QTractor to use it.

IRRC Soundcrab works nice, looks nice but none of the few native VST hosts managed to
store the setup, in particular the loaded soundfont was subjected to some amnesia

You need to compile a software with the SDK to be able to host native (.so;
_not_ .dll) VST plug-ins. JOST's binaries on the site are already
precompiled with it (the author just does not include the header(s) in the
source tarballs). IIRC, Qtractor can also be compiled with the SDK and it
can host native plug-ins, besides the commercial options like Renoise and
energyXT.

Yes, that's what I found. It also regularly crashed both testing and
stable versions of jost. Since jost is made by the same source, I have
decided to skip soundcrab. Saving of setup was also the unavailable
essential in the others I tested, except timidity. Through much
tweaking I got timidity to sound acceptable, but frankly, I hate loading
my system with arcana. I can do arcana, I just don't choose to do so;
on gigs I want as straightforward as I can get to live the moment: I
don't gig with alphanumeric keyboard, just mouse.
Is there something akin to an easy way to zero-volume MIDI channels in
Qsynth?
Will be checking out Calf. There appears to be a whole lot there.
The last three times I tried to use Lash, I couldn't get it to do much,
but it is sounding like a piece I am missing. Anyone have something
like a document or example step-by-step?

I have little to none experience with the other sf2 player
options. Even though the author of ghostess calls it
'sloppy, hurried HACKWARE' it never crashed here and I
use it a lot.

sorry, arcane again:-), but you say you can do arcana,
then why not write a simple session script in advance
and just execute it once before the gig.
My Lash experiences are similar to yours, thus until this
changes scripts seem to be the best option to me.

ghostess
works well. The menu item 'save configuration...' will allow
you to store a file. Make that file executable, execute it and
the session is restored.
Ah, now that I like. Got it to work, and actually, so far it looks like
the very best of the bunch. A little arcane yes, but the arcana goes
away very nicely when not needed :-)
I ended up saving a session based on:
ghostess -1 -chan 2 /usr/lib/dssi/fluidsynth-dssi.so
so I can keep Yoshimi on MIDI channel 1, and piano on channel 2.
