SpiralSynth Modular would be my first choice, and I would definitely
second Kluppe and Minicomputer. There was a project afoot at
pawfal.org to convert the modules from SSM to LADSPA plugins, but I'm
not sure how active that is.

their effects and/or synths natively to LV2. - But I guess one the first

For me the GUI sounds also like a quite annoying problem - wouldn't it
be possible to limit LV2 to one GUI toolkit and then use this for all
applications regardless with which toolkit they are written ?
(E.g. in a separate thread or process - then it would be also possible
to use any toolkit you like in the plugin and it is simply started in
the host ...)
Otherwise I don't see much sense in writing LV2 GUIs ATM and using them
in non-GTK applications ...

LV2 seems pretty well-defined to me so far. I'd hope it doesn't try to do
"everything".
I used an LV2 synth for a year (the old LV2 AZR3 in Elven host), live, in production use,
with excellent results, so from my standpoint it seems very promising.

Well, it's not about doing "everything" automatically.
If you simply want to make a plugin with a quick GUI you don't want to
always program the communication over shared memory or whatever ... so a
class would be nice which already has this functionality (of course only
if you need it).
Programming plugins should be as easy as possible (as it already is e.g.
with lv2-c++-tools).
However, it's just an idea ...

What I would like to see on Linux, is a software like Synthedit but to
create some LV2 Synth or Effects. It would be fantastic and a very easy way
to create plugins for people like me who don't know about C or C++ code ...
