Is anyone familiar with Frankfurt Flughafen bahnhof?
I have to change trains there coming from Brussels then on to a regional train
to Mainz.
There is only a 15 minute difference between arrival and departure, so if at
all possible I'd like to get some idea in advance of where to go!
The return journey is much simpler through connections I know.

The bahnhof at Frankfurt Flughafen is small and wonderful. You will not
have any problems if things are on time. I can't give you actual
directions, though.

very long hallway, turn left at the end, down some stairs. with luggage,

FWIW there is nothing like "German punctuality" for Deutsche Bahn AG
rail traffic. Time tables are nearly useless. They usually are not on
time and in addition they go on strike several times a year. You can not
rely on arrivals and departures. It might be different for competing
companies.

It sounds remarkably like the situation at London Waterloo station :-/
I always travel as light as possible - one smallish holdall - so I should be

According to the info on trip planner site of Die Bahn,
the distance is 300 m, and in the local station you very
probably need the S8 to Wiesbaden on track 3.

Not sure if it helps but both stations are mapped quite well on
OpenStreetMap:

So you can get a grip of how far the platforms are apart. The
Fernbahnhof is north of the highway and the Regionalbahnhof is south
of the highway.
