I have no RT kernel here, but have no such Rosegarden problems with
2.6.24-1-686 (from Debian Lenny) or 2.6.26-1-686 (from Debian Sid).
There's also a Rosegarden email list with excellent support at
rosegarden-user(a)lists.sourceforge.net.

According to Konsole, the only KDE application I've got running, KDE is
at 3.5.9. I don't particularly want to update this unless I have to

been the Rosegarden bug tracker yesterday and noted some comment that I
interpreted as "if you are using a package from a distro, don't come
complaining to us."
And that's why I asked here first, in case it was a familiar problem.
As nobody has jumped up and said "ooh, yes, that's the so-and-so bug", I
think that my next step will be to build Rosegarden by hand, rather than
relying on the Gentoo ebuild - no idea what weird patches they may have
thrown into the mix. Waste of time putting it on the Gentoo Bugzilla as
I've had a bug open for Zynaddsubfx for something like a year now.
(That has been resolved through a patch which still hasn't got into the
Gentoo packaging system; looks like there's very little package
maintenance going on for things like this and I ain't doing it as I
can't get my head around the dev side of the Gentoo build system.)
If the problem persists once I've built everything by hand, I will
indeed bounce this off to rosegarden-user and will notify this list with
the outcome.

I'm not actually running KDE as my desktop environment. I actually use
Fluxbox as my desktop environment but have KDE (3.5.9) because it
provides me with Konsole, which I consider to be the best terminal I
have ever used.
My next step - and certainly the one before I start trying to update KDE
- will be to build Rosegarden by hand and then throw any errors at the
rosegarden-users list, as (other) David suggests.
I also fail to see why this application is so entangled with KDE; after
all, it's Rosegarden, not Krosegarden ;-) I believe that we should be
cutting as much bloat as possible from our environment when running
audio (or any other realtime) applications - KDE just doesn't figure in
this in my mind.

That's one reason I admire Qtractor as a MIDI and digital audio
recorder/MIDI editor. It's developer (Rui Nuno Capela) has made it a
pure QT application, without depending on KDE.

In a debian distro, I would recommend to first enable source-packages
in /etc/apt/sources.list and do:
apt-get update
apt-get build-dep rosegarden
I don't know if there is a comparable command on gentoo.
Then compile rosegarden from source (is not that hard):
cmake .
make

I don't know if there is a comparable command on
gentoo.
I have done something similar - updating all dependencies. That
includes an update from KDE 3.5.7-15 to 3.5.9. I wasn't going to do the
KDE update due to the time it takes (Gentoo builds everything from
source), but I wasn't working yesterday so set the update running anyway.
Then compile rosegarden from source (is not that
hard):
cmake .
make
I've had one last go at using the Gentoo ebuild - will test it later
today or tomorrow. If it's still broken, I'll build from source.
