Hi
I remember the noise reduction provided by Sound Forge years ago. The
idea was the the user selected a portion of the waveform that contained
*only* the noise, then the software would remove this from the entire
recording. It worked quite well AFAIR.
Anything similar available in the linux eco system?

AFAIR audacity has the same. No idea how well it performs in comparison.

Audacity has a built in function to do
this but it is not as good as
Sound Forge and only suitable for gentle use ie. partial noise
reduction. It is easy to noticeably damage the sound if used too heavily.
The best noise reduction I've used, mainly for vinyl record cleanup, was
Waves X-Noise and the other Waves noise reduction plugins. Expensive and
not Linux though.
I'm also keen to find a better Linux solution.

What kind of noise should be removed, from what kind of audio signal,
for what purpose? IMO the kind of noise, the kind of audio signal and
the reason to remove the noise are important to recommend what to do or
what not to do.

Well Sound Forge was good at everything I threw at it. Hiss, vinyl
noise, hum.
The problem at hand is hiss, so the kind of thing you could remove with
a LPF, but in the process damage the recording by removing the sparkle...

(high Q).
First do not cut, instead boost. With the boosted small frequency range

readjust the frequency too.

Even using a notch filter in combination with a dynamic multi-band
effect would have much impact to the "sparkle". I suspect that only a
notch filter is able to keep the "sparkle" and to damp the hiss a
little bit. Assumed the filter could be used for individual tracks
instead of the sum, its to consider to use dynamic effects too.
However, you can't fake Dolby and Co. for recordings that were already
done without Dolby or Co., you only can provide a smarter kind of noise
gate e.g. a gate that behaves different at different frequencies.
Using an expander and after that a compressor with a different ratio
and/or threshold seems to be not as smart as using a multi-band dynamic
effect just to gate or compress a signal depending on the frequency.

A quick run through the changelog indicates this is gnome 2.* based still.
Most of the world has moved on to the (incompatible) Gnome3 libs.
Hopefully such a change over was just not listed.

When searching for a Linux alternative I remember pretty good results
with Gnome Wave Cleaner [1]. Not sure if it's maintained and if it still
works though, haven't used it in a while..
Also if it's hiss, as others suggested you might manage with just EQ?
