Hey Guys,
I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe guitar amp and noticed there is an preamp out
for an effects loops. I was wondering if there were any other uses for this?
Would the output on this suitable to bypass the preamp on my audio
interface? Would this tube preamp stage be of any benefit? Could I hook up
an SM57 to the amp input to be sent to the interface?

the pre in a guitar amp is designed mainly for a high impedance source
(guitar pickup etc) whereas the mic outputs a low impedance signal. it
will still work and may sound great, but it won't sound 'clean'
(especially with the hrd's preamp section, which is not at all
designed for a clean audio path). the other thing to worry about is
the signal level that the pre section outputs not being too high level
for your soundcard's inputs. looking at the schematics i think it
should be ok though.

What is the output level and type of the preamp section? Is it equivalent
to line level? If its OK to hook up to my interface, do you think it would
be worth the effort and bypass my interface's preamp?

according to the schematics, a 4mV 1khz sine wave entering the input
will give a 66mV output at the preamp out socket. i know my guitars
put out a higher voltage than that (i have one that can put out over
2V peaks!) but the preamp output voltage wouldn't increase linearly
with that i shouldn't think. i would be very surprised if the output
voltage was anything to worry about, as i think the opamp before the
plug is designed to drop the voltages down. say what you like about
fender, that opamp isn't anything special, so i doubt it would handle
much more than your soundcard's line input.
i'm pretty sure i have hooked my (now in pieces) one in that way once.
like i said in the previous email, it isn't going to replace a 'clean'
mic pre, but it should give interesting sounds... wondering now what
the 'more drive' settings would have sounded like with my valve mic :)
