Hello,
i am considering to buy a Ice-16, maybe an Ice-16D. The reason i want
this is that you can use it as multi track recorder or as soundcard. But
i can only use it as soundcard if its working with linux, but i cannot
find anything with google.
So the question: Has anyone ever tried to use the ice-16 with linux? did
it worked? or is there no way?

Looks like a nice device - I don't think its class compliant USB 2.0 audio
interface though,
given that they have a "Software->Drivers" page:

Unless somebody reverse engineered it, or they made the spec available to
ALSA/Linux devs, I doubt this interface is going to work on Linux.

Haven't tried it - so I hope to be proved wrong :)
If all else fails, find it in a shop somewhere and ask to try it out.

Well, i red this but it doesn't really make sure its linux compatible, does it?
If nobody got it working i will simply order one and try on my own and tell you then ;)

The drivers are for windows. Class compliant generally means needs drivers
for windows but not for OSx/macos.

I can't say for sure with this unit itself, but I do know the Qu16/24/32
series products do work with linux. Not personal experience, but I have
read of people using them with Linux. They need no drivers to work with
OSx which is always a good sign (from

Audio compliant so there are no drivers required for Mac computers."
One should consider windows a non-compliant OS I guess...

One more information on synchronisation: As a soundcard using firewire
its only possible to use two synced devices, with usb only one is
possible. so daisy chaining more than two units for using as a soundcard
wouldn't work.

No you dont ask too much, i see it the same way and i think most manuals
hide pretty important information. After reading the hole manual where a
lot of obious things about windows drivers are discribed i also felt a
little bit disappointed. Maybe someone should ask the support about.
They only write down what they think the users need, asking something
which isnt written anywhere may influence the future manuals? I dont know ;)

uses (live recording) but the use of non-standard/undocumented sync
options would limit it's usablility to one use only, making it over priced

can't find info for that) it may use one of those things inside the cable
which means I would be able to hand make a usable cable (maybe). That

No you dont ask too much, i see it the same way and i think most manuals

that I read through the manual in deciding _if_ I would buy their box.
Yes, many information are hidden, thats why we need opensource hardware.
This is another topic but i would really like to have an device like the
Ice-16 in opensource. Maybe even less features. It should be an simple
device, not much functions but high quality. Back to topic ;) I ordered
one to test the linux compatibility, so i should get an registration
number and i can ask for the sync option.
