Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap SMP motherboards?
Something that can handle a couple 667 PIIIs would be ideal, but if the
total price including CPUs is <$300, I'll consider it.
My motherboard seems to not work with SMP anymore (freezing, restarting).
I'm pretty sure it isn't a kernel thing because I've tried every version
between 2.4.17 and 2.4.20 and they all act the same. It used to be rock
solid at 2.4.18.
Alternatively, I'd like the name of a good vendor of motherboards.

I've done some research but not on the intel systems.
I looked at AMD stuff. The only thing I can suggest is
to look at the overclocking sites. Those cats seem to
be on their game.

I would stay away from the via chipset boards, I have one (Tyan Tiger
Via Pro KT133 I think) and it sucks. You might be able to find a cheap
Intel Server works board these days. They seem to be the more stable
setup.

Yeah, I've been thinking of avoid anything VIA based. Their IDE support
seems shady.

I have a ABIT VIA694X based machine at work and I've been very happy with
it (2x866), it was cheap, but I dont know if they still make them.

I used to hava a gigabyte GA-6BXDS board with all scsi drives and 2xpIII
600. That machine was solid as a rock. in fact i sold it to someone and
they leave it on 24/7 as a web server now.

It no longer works in SMP mode. It freezes and restarts. And it doesn't
take any heavy usage to trigger it. Login, startx, launch mozilla, boom.
I removed a PCI card, and then the trouble started. Maybe I scratched the
motherboard or something. I tried switching the CPUs to see if the second
CPU had died, but it didn't make a difference.

I've just recently got a Tyan dual-PIII board that
seems to be holding up ok. I only have a single PIII-866,
though; have not tried SMP on it. Found it cheapish
on Ebay (well under $100).

Thanks. I just this instant got it working again. I had the motherboard
speed set to 133 when it should have been 66. I guess I was accidently
overclocking it or something. D'oh.
