I've purchased a new Asus EEE 1000 PC, and I love this thing.
First off, almost everything on it just works with Linux, out of the box! I've never
had a laptop on which everything actually worked properly. Audio, wireless,
suspend-to-disk, even the webcam works with Debian EEE distro, out of the box! I was
stunned. I've never experienced anything like this with linux.
It's tiny, weighs almost nothing, has a usable keyboard, no moving parts (except the
fan), runs a full linux distro, and sips battery power. I can stuff it into my backpack
and I am in portable computing heaven.
Because this thing is so many kinds of awesome, of course I want to run JACK on it and use
it as my new softsynth for live performance purposes.
I'm running Debian, using the 2.6.26 kernel (Lenny). I'm told that this kernel is
completely unsuitable for Linux Audio work. However, I can't backtrack to older
kernels because this one has all the hardware support I need.
What kernel would you recommend for patching with Ingo goodness? This thing is a dual 686
Intel Atom at 1.2Ghz; with my good USB soundcard I'd expect to at least get a couple
fluidsynth instances and LADSPA plugins going without incident.

how is identical hardware for twice the price of AspireOne or Wind awesome?
at 700 USD, you can get a low-end/high-power entry-level Core2/AMD notebook from
Acer/HP/etc.. which will blow away the Atom for audio work.

as the vanilla kernel has been for some time now - the same time period during which i
have been unable to achieve stable (or often even a full boot sequence) usage of the Ingo
kernel(a)
ive found the Aspire One is completely unsuitable for Linux Audio work, or anything besids
running piddly ncurses apps. firefox cold-launch is 30 seconds on 0load system, with minor
load (apt-get installs, etc) it reaches 90+ seconds. in comparison a coldlaunch of firefox
on my thinkpad x200 is about 1 or 2 seconds no matter what.
i think most of the problem is the fact that the chip is 1/6th the speed of the current
Core 2's, and the Intel SSD in it is atrocious,
which even with the wear-leveling stuff disabled in BIOS, suffers excessive IO freezups
and has a real world write speed of ~200-500K/second.
However, I can't backtrack to older kernels
because this one has all the hardware support I need.
What kernel would you recommend for patching with Ingo goodness? This thing is a dual 686
Intel Atom at 1.2Ghz
the N270 is actually 1.6 ghz. if its appearing at 1.2, theyve underclocked the max, as was
done with prior EEE models,
or you havent given enough load to reach 1.6 ghz..
if its appearing as 2 CPUs, that is hyperthreading.. which is a feature of the chip..

Well, if you're comparing the 8.9" Aspire One to the Thinkpad X200.... the
X200 has almost double the volume and 50% more weight, and still costs
almost 5 times as much as the Aspire One. Sure, it's faster too, and
apparently the fan is more to your liking. To someone whose first and
second priorities are size/portability and price, though, the X200 would
simply be the wrong choice.

Nope, they're cheap enough to buy off the shelf and get the warranty.
Besides, my main machine is a Thinkpad X41, so I'm already on board with
the whole 12" thing (in fact, I've never bought a laptop with a screen
larger than 12 inches, and I've paid a premium for that.) If I buy a
netbook, it'll be have to be one with a hard disk in order to replace my
clunky, Linux-based-but-crippled Archos 160GB jukebox.

I must say I indeed share every bit of your excitement in respect to Linux +
netbooks. I too recently got a MSI Wind (was barely over $400) and after
wiping the drive and installing Linux I can only say this thing is truly
amazing. In my 10+ years of using Linux I've never had this kind of
experience: everything worked except wireless for which I simply compiled a
driver that did not make it into Ubuntu 8.10 (for those who venture in this
direction, make sure to check what kind of wireless card you have--don't
trust online how-tos as my netbook needed an entirely different driver;
apparently MSI has a habit of changing these things). Suspend works,
hibernate works, wireless works (after a quick compile), webcam works, Skype
works, little dual screen setup works without having to restart X (great for
presentations), and the funniest thing ever is that the manufacturer's
latest BIOS allows overclocking with a Fn+F10 (dedicated key with a nice
blue icon, too!) for up to 24% extra power (AC only). As if that weren't
geeky enough, when overclocking the power button changes from blue to
orange. The thing comes with a 6-cell battery (~4.5 hours of battery life)
and a 1.6GHz Atom that packs quite a punch for a system that typically uses
less than 15Watts.
Unlike EEE, though, this one does have a traditional HD, but it is a beast
(160GB). Now, the coolest thing is that I have full effects running on
Compiz, installed JACK, added 3 lines to limits.conf and presto, got rock
solid RT performance at 512x2 using crappy built-in soundcard. Compiled
Ardour 2.7 and haven't had a single xrun on a vanilla 8.10 kernel. All in
all, I am a very, very happy owner of this netbook.
If there is room for complaining then that would be:
1) 1024x600 resolution at times is cumbersome as some dialogs/apps by
default have windows that don't allow resizing below ~650 pixels height-wise
(cough, cough, ardour mixer? :-) making it a bit annoying to deal with as
taskbars end-up covering the ok/cancel buttons
2) my model does not have synaptics touchpad (some claim to have it on this
model, again suggesting that MSI mixes/matches parts) so no nifty scrolling
features for me
3) the lack of a FW port for my FA-101. Seems like I might have to invest in
an USB audio card...

For some time I've been thinking of a netbook for audio 'doodling'
while travelling etc. and this sort of thing seems just what I'm after.
The thing that concerns me is the still woefully short battery life :(
FWIW, MSI is supposed to start selling a 9-cell battery for Wind (there is
also a 3-cell version which I think is worthless) that supposedly gives you
up to 7 hours. That being said, take this with a grain of salt as the 6-cell
was supposed to last 5.5 hours according to online reviews but in Linux it
gets closer to 4. I haven't tried running any benchmarks but I suspect the
way you get 5.5 out of it is by turning everything off but the bare
essentials (e.g. no wifi, lowest brightness, etc.).

Second that. My eee 701 works brilliantly for two channel
recording
with a dinky USB sound device (one of those £10 7.1 sound cards). No
Xruns and perfectly fine for on-the-go podcast recording. I'm
pondering about an USB AT2020 at the mo for true portability and good
sound (or buying one of these recorder-mike combos).

Common design flaw of Intel architecture laptops. I've been through this dance before
on my other ASUS lappy.
I have an M-Audio FastTrack which is what I use for live work. It's bulky but
doesn't weigh much. The USB interrupts are mostly free.
I'm shocked that the hda-intel works *at all* on this netbook. I'm perfectly happy
to use it for VoIP and websurfing, and not for anything serious.

find you need a small usb sound device to get over problems with xruns
from the rather dodgy intel soundchip on the same interrupt as the
graphics device....

Can you tell us how Aldrin goes on your eee? Apart from the interrupts
that is. Is the GUI usable? Can you get many plugins running?

No, it should work fine with an external card (well mine does
anyway).. you can't expect particularly brilliant performance given
the CPU power, but it works well enough to run a softsynth without
xruns for example.

I tried to get Audacity (1.2.6) to behave nicely on my eee 901 and the
results were interesting: small stutters every few seconds when playing
back, even when I covered the window with a terminal to prevent screen
updating. I could see the cursor stopping in sync with the stutters, too.
No tweaking module parameters or choice of playback devices fixed the
problem. Recording seemed to work fine.
All the Xandros-shipped programs I tried did play audio without any
problems, and I can even watch a DVB recording in fullscreen for minutes
with perfect sound, which to me says the interrupt problem shouldn't be
that serious. I wonder what Audacity does differently from those other
alternatives?
These are just a few observations, I'm probably not going to use my Eee
much for anything audio-related, so please spare me the messages on
upgrading kernel, distro or hardware.. I know about those options already
;)

What is the LANG environment variable in the terminal where mutt is
running? Try export LANG=en_US and see if that pink ugliness goes away.

What is the LANG environment variable in the terminal where mutt is
running? Try export LANG=en_US and see if that pink ugliness goes away.

When I'm away from home I SSH into my home machine and read mail with
Mutt. Far better than trying to X dpslay a GUI mail client across an
SSH tunnel.

Now that no one has responded to your question about kernels;
The best I can say is to check out what Fernando is cooking up in the CCRMA fry pan.
He's been putting a lot of time into trying to get a decent kernel about the 2.6.24.xx
into the stew that doesn't leave that bad latency taste. I'm currently running
Fernando's Ingo's 2.6.26.8-1.rt11.2.fc9.ccrma.x86_64.rt flavoured variety and it
seems stable so far within fedora9 (which until most recently has a tendency to boil out
of it's pan).
I haven't gotten a chance to put the above through real good audio taste test yet; so
if someone who has could please speak up about it's palatability?
