Hello,
[I've just delurked and re-enabled Mail Delivery for this list for a
while to ask this question; there's usually too much traffic for me
to keep up nowadays, sadly.]
I Googled and looked at the archives but there's not much here about
printing music notation. I'm needing to buy a printer that will be
ideal for score printing and also plays well with Debian/DeMuDi.
Since I don't really need colour, I'd prefer a laser printer.
I'll stick with black+white A4 for now for cost reasons -
I'm looking to spend about 200-300 UK pounds (about $300-500) max.
I've not yet used Lilypond or any other scoring software, but believe
that Postscript is a major plus. I know that Ghostscript exists to
convert Postscript documents, but figure that if my printer natively
understands PS it will be quicker and save processor time.
Is Postscript Level 3 required, or will Level 2 suffice? PJL? PCL5?
I also want a networkable one to share over my (wired) LAN.

...and am considering getting a Kyocera Mita FS-920, FS-1010N or FS1020
or maybe something else by another penguin-loving company.
Since I do have a fondness for old lo-tech gear, I did entertain ideas
about a refurbished HP LaserJet 4 or 5 (fond memories from college days)
after the high praise these old tanks got on Slashdot a while ago, but
am thinking they may be a bit slow/tired compared to modern kit. My main
considerations are reliability, build-quality, cost-per-page, speed and
looks. I won't be printing reams and reams, and I can always manually
re-enter pages to do duplex (both sides) printing.
Sorry if this seems Off-Topic, but I wanted to check firstly that
a Postscript mono-laser is a good choice for music. If necessary I'll
take the discussion elsewhere to ask about specific models, unless
anyone here has any good recommendations/horror stories to share.

I have a Kyocera (Kyocera-Mita) FS-1020D (Duplex--can print on both
sides of the paper) laser printer, and it works very well. It's own .ppd
file (Postcript Printer Definition file), which is included on the CD
that comes with the printer or can be downloaded from the Internet,
works very well with the printer and CUPS (Common Unix Printing System),
without the need for filtering through Ghostscript.
I like the printer very much, and use it to print scores I have produced
using LilyPond. It has excellent black-and-white output.

Many programs that print PS can be configured for Level 2 or Level 3 or
automatically get the printer's requirements from the PPD file.
I use an HP Laserjet 1100 for printing music. Somewhere along the line
(CUPS, ghostscript etc) PS gets turned into suitable PCL and it just
works, absolutely perfectly.
Unless you've got a very compelling reason for needing all the CPU power
you can muster, it's not worth spending the extra money on a PS printer.
Processing delay is insignificant compared with printer warmup time for
the first page and overlaps printing for further pages and I've never
noticed any sign of excessive CPU load.
Don't get a Windows GDI printer and you'll be fine. PCL no problem.
I also want a networkable one to share over my (wired)

My LJ1100 isn't a network printer, but it's hooked up to a server box. I
do also have a PS colour laser that is networked (QMS/Minolta
magicolor 3100) and they both just work (after a little futzing about
with CUPS, PPD files etc).

Pick any printer for your best mix of those qualities (not a Linuix issue),
check with the linux printing database, and you're away. I don't think you
need to restrict yourself to postscript. You are certainly right to
choose a laser though.

If an HP LaserJet 4/5 isn't good enough for your score printing, you
must be into mass-producing plate-quality scores.
I have a LaserJet 5SiMX (that's with the PS add-on) and it's amazing.
600dpi, duplex printing, and a 250k page duty cycle.
You can often find them in needing their routing maintainence - every
250k pages, they need to have the rollers cleaned/replaced, change the
drum, etc.
There's no way anyone's newer SOHO crap kit can touch my printer. And
the best part? Toner carts are rated to be changed once per
maintainence cycle. As I will very doubtfully ever print 125,000
pages, I have no need to ever buy another printer supply.

Be careful. Some really old laser printers emit lots of ozone which is
a known carcinogen. And toner is not good for you either.

Not the same OS but I have an HP Laserjet 1300 on my Fedora Core 3 box
(usb) that has been a workhorse for me and took zero effort to set up.
I also send the few printouts from my Windoze laptop to it via Samba.
