Hi,
since I'm using Linux nowadays more or less only for mastering with
imported audio files, I didn't notice a disastrous change of the
qjackctl GUI, that seemingly already happened a while ago.
The "Connect" window is replaced by a "Graph" window.
Complex connections are never easy to track visually, but at least the
old "Connect" GUI is clear, concise, well-structured and readable.
The new "Graph" GUI is seemingly an attempt to draw virtual Pollock
pictures, see https://i.imgur.com/3TFRGZF.png, even the text became
unreadable. However, even without way too small text at tolerable
zooming for the graph, in one colour on nearly the same colour and even
without shadow effects, the way the routing is displayed by default
renders qjackctl unusable.
I'm aware that it is possible to move the items, I also can move my
computer, synthesizers, mixing console, effects, but for good reasons I
don't want to move anything from one to another place, if my intention
is to restore a session and to make music.
Searching for the last usable qjackctl release, I found out that the last
version providing the usable "Connect" GUI is 0.5.2.

Hi, I just installed 5.5 to see what's up...
Maybe best to discuss at their site, but here's my take:
At first I thought I'd made a mistake because it
was the same old UI. Then I found the magic button...

Ah, connection graphs... There are two kinds: Ugly or butt ugly.
A necessary evil. All kidding aside there are two kinds and
it was wise to leave them both in there.
It looks great. Nice job!
I'm sure it will be improved just give it time. Talk to them.
However if I may offer some advice to the team:
I agree on those above points.
Please, below around 7pt font, *turn off* the anti-aliasing.
In MusE it did wonders for our small mixer strip fonts.
Wow, did it ever sharpen, *brighten*, and crispen those small fonts!
It really made the text stand out fully.
We added a 'lowest anti-aliased font size' user setting.
Hopefully whatever drawing mechanism is being used would
allow this tweak. Ours is still good ol' Qt widgets.
That text you see in the graphs could be brightened by, oh about
30% to 50% more by doing it. And it'll be much sharper.
Also, I agree that for maximum readability, here the text really
ought to be white. Especially since here it's on different coloured
backgrounds and worse, those colours are user-selectable and thus
apparently /random/.
For that reason I strongly agree as well that the text really
needs a *shadow*. That's easy to do as well.

Btw. I dislike shadows for fonts, as well as for items (windows etc.), a
starting point might be to care about your anti-aliasing hint and the
colouration. However, the "Graph" approach sometimes might be an
advantage, but most of the times the "Connect" style is better.
Take a look at the screenshot I posted. It does show all Ardour
connections in one item and the connections are not displayed inside
the item, they are turned backwards, under the transparent item.
Fortunately when using Ardour, qjackctl seldom is needed, if at all,
for Ardour intern connections.
Btw. even if I should like this "Graph" thingy, I couldn't use it on my
machine [1], since its nearly completely unresponsive. Selecting a
connection inside the partial shown Ardour item takes around 3 seconds.
Scrolling is more or less impossible, it takes very long to move the
Ardour item or before the scroll bars or mouse wheel take effect.

My setup is very simple, so a complex graphical graph rendering is not a
worry to me. But I thought back to my QJackCtl days and thought: Yes,
the old list way is very clear and easy to use.

Hi David,
nowadays I very seldom need qjackctl. I get the most complex
connections when using Linux, if I master mix imported audio tracks.
Since I'm doing this with Ardour, there is no need to run qjackctl.
It's more pleasant to let Ardour control the connections.
Thank you everybody for the pointer to QjackCtl's menu option, this
solves restoring and controlling old sessions, without downgrading
QjackCtl.
IMO the plugin approach anyway is better than connecting
stand-alone-apps and external gear by jack or anything else. The
problem is that Linux plugins are missing features to interact with the
DAW and on iOS where those features are provided, the DAW and plugins
not always flawlessly work together (using AUM as a workaround does
solve the issue, I suspect to be user-friendly it is programmed to
workaround the bugs of the DAW and of the plugins, instead of waiting
that they fix the bugs ;).
For nowadays complex MIDI (+ Audio) configurations I migrated to an iPad
Pro 12.9-inch, 3rd Gen, this means that I don't do complex MIDI
connections with external synth anymore, since virtual synth could
replace almost all external synth. If I ever should use an external
synth, then perhaps just one at a time, maybe my Oberheim Matrix-1000
or Yoshimi from my Linux PC. Integration of virtual synth with the
host, usually Cubasis, works more pleasant than it does on Linux, if it
should fail, there is AUM, which replaced the crappy Audiobus 2 for me
completely. I'm even not thinking about upgrading to Audibus 3.
Connections done via AUM work in the same way, as when doing them via a
host such as Ardour on Linux or Cubasis on iOS, still providing perfect
control, e.g. if wanted to sync delays, LFOs etc. to BPM, something
I'm missing when using Linux for MIDI, let alone the lack of virtual
Linux synth to replace almost all external synth.
Btw. when I used the iPad 2, I couldn't completely replace the PC, but
with the iPad Pro released end of last year this changed. At the moment
there is just no software available for iOS to mix everything in a
pleasant way. Doing this requires to use Ardour on Linux for me
(because it requires real subgroups, real aux channels, sane HDMI
display usage, when connecting the iPad to the HDMI display, you get
the same as you see on the iPad's 12.9-inch display), let alone that my
USB Focusrite audio device's audio quality is just good enough for
recording, but not to hear details when doing the mix, that are audible
when using my Linux PC's RME card (so it's also a matter of not having
enough money, to get everything that is needed ;).

Here (v. 0.5.5-1) there is a setting in Setup... > Misc > Replace
Connections with Graph Button which will retain the 'legacy'
interface/behaviour if unselected. Also, even if selected the
Connections window remains available through the right-click context
menu (as is the Graph one...).
