Does anyone have any experience of using a MIDI-over-USB dumb keyboard?
Does it need special drivers or can I just plug it in and have it automatically
found by my machine?
I'm hoping to be able to use Yoshimi on my netbook at an impromptu gig.
I'm running a cut-down debian, but will get qjackctl from the repository (which
usually fetches and configures everything else I need.

What do you mean by "dumb" here? That it doesn't make sound on its
own?
If so, they're they only kind of keyboard I've ever owned, and if its class
compliant Midi over USB, it just pops up in the ALSA tab of QJackCtl.
Using the MIDI driver selection in QJackCtl's setup dialog, you can specify
"raw" or "seq", both will show the ALSA soundcards MIDI events in JACK
MIDI.
If you're still doubtful, what's the make & model of the keyboard? Perhaps
somebody has experience with that exact hardware.

On topic: I have a cheap Akai Pro LPK25 Laptop Performance Keyboard
I plug it in and it shows up as a device in qjackctl and works with no
probem
On a tangent: When I do this, it shows up as Alsa midi, not as jack
midi. i use a2j to show both. How can I make it show up as Jack midi
without a separate program?

Yes dumb as in only sends MIDI (and may even be powered over USB).
The problem I have is that I don't know what keyboard it will be. The idea is
that I just take my netbook and plug in what is available.

That's encoraging. If a cheap one works easily, there's how that a slightly
better one will be OK too - if that's not too optimistic!
Also, Alsa MIDI suits me. It's what I've been using up to now on my main
setup :)

My Moog Little Phatty Stage II also shows up and works perfectly,

I use an M-Audio Axiom whose USB implementation has one serious

Section 1.2 Setup, page 5:
"USB hubs are not supported. M-Audio suggests that you connect directly
to one of your computers built in USB ports."
Do you have any other gear connected to you hub while you use your
Axiom?

A lot of computers already have an internal hub for more than one external
port. So even if you "connect directly to one of your computers built in
USB ports.", you are already using a hub. I have found it useful to check
which port each of my plugs is on any machine I use for music. Normally
USB 1-5. Almost always there is more than one plug on the same USB line.
In fact it seems only USB 1-3 gets used on both my machines. I do this so
I can avoid a USB port that shares irqs with the video card, etc.

I don't know of any USB MIDI keyboard that isn't supported by my driver.
