Hey everyone,
I'm looking at an audio interface/sound card for pro recording. Anyone had
any success with the Delta 1010 under Linux (Fedora Core 3 - CCRMA)? I found
a great deal on a used on so thought I'd check.

Yes. It's a very good card. Probably one of the best in terms of
Linux support. It works well at low latency and sounds great.

Yes. It's a very good card. Probably one of the best in terms of
Linux support. It works well at low latency and sounds great.

I'd expect that you would be able to get even better sound quality using an
RME card... though at a considerably higher price.
Several years ago we did some work (at my day job) with Hammerfall cards and I
recall that these cards provide their data in an noninterleaved format. Since
this is what you generally want it is possible the CPU load will go down
since decoding/encoding isn't necessary.
Besides, using anything lower than 64 frames is in my mind purely academic,
there are so many other latency inducers that it's just not feasible.

Compared to the M-Audio device it has good quality and can later be used with
a laptop. But there is one thing that I don't understand yet.
Most devices have I/Os but can a Input be also a Output? In that case there
has to be a DA and a AD on the same port. So this device has 8 INs and 8
OUTs which can be used full duplex.
I think that's what I would need.

my delta 66 handles 32 frames just fine :) I can even go down to 8
[just running jack though. haven't used it for anything serious, as the
idle cycle load is already at 20% with this on my 1.2 ghz athlon :). no
xruns though]

It does.
However, I find that latency below 64 frames is nice for testing
purposes but makes no noticeable difference when making music.
So one question still remains: what advantage(s) would
a RME card have
compared to M-Audio?
You get more channels for more money. I believe they are both good
products and well-supported under Linux.

I bought a used Delta 1010LT from Ebay last year. I run it on an Athalon
XP 2500 / Asus Mobo w 1gb ram. I paid $165.00 IIRC. This card is
awesome for the money! Only problem with the cheaper LT is some cross
talk isolation issues due to the cheaper RCA pigtails.
Either way, I have been doing some work with it recently and it is just
killer for the money.

Hey all,
So I am into birthday season... my project studio platform for the
foreseeable future is a dell 8600 with an 2.0 GHz pentiun m and 512 MB
Ram-- sound card is ac'97 using the snd-inte8x0 driver.
I know I need a desktop but... Surprisingly this little beast does
pretty well- for now at least.
As the next step in building the project studio I am thinking about
getting either an--
ART pro-channel mic-preamp with some Wharfedale diamond 8.2 Active
Monitors
OR
some kind of outboard recording hardware that comes in fire-wire or usb
to the laptop... definitely with preamps and good signal isolation.
Digital/MIDI etc. would all be good too.
Does anyone have some advice on firewire/usb hardware for linux?
Can anyone estimate which route--.. preamp plus ac'97 card or the
outboard hardware would make my electric bass/guitar and acoustic guitar
tracks sound best right now?
Does anyone know about those wharfedale active studio montitors?

You could try the Tascam us122 which seems to work quite good. But usb has the
limitation suffering from having not many INs and OUTs because of bandwidth
or whatever.

I don't know exactly but these firewire interfaces don't work with linux yet.
There are some alpha drivers for some devices - it's called freebob.
