hi everyone!
this list has been very busy lately with off-topic exchanges on linux
(and windows!) applications and their respective advocacy in general.
the off-topic traffic seems to be drowning the audio-related discussions.
i don't really mind and it's not up to me do decide, but i'd like to ask
you to consider all the folks out there with crammed inboxes who thought
they were subscribing to an audio list ;)
in any case, the discussions (whether on-topic or not) show what a nice
place lau has become, and how much people like to hang out and just chat
about anything. ;) take my comment as a suggestion only, if you feel you
need to reply, consider to do it in private mail, and for a quick chat
about not-so-on-topic things with your linux audio pals, try #lad at
freenode.org. (and come to karlsruhe and to linuxconf.au and to linuxtag
next year, of course!)

I just noticed that PD has four different lists: pd-list, pd-dev, pd-announce,
and off-topic. About off-topic it says:
- This list is intended to be a forum for the pd-community that allows
the discussion of things apart from pure-data.
- It is probably a good idea, to subscribe to this list too, since
off-topic threads on the main list will eventually be moved to this list
(by users, not by the administrator)

I think this is a pretty good idea, even though the signal noise ratio
of linux-audio-user/dev is very reasonable as it is. But the lists _do_
have a lot of traffic, and splitting off some of it into a seperate list
might be a good idea. Maybe Joern could ask the PD admin if this
approach has been satisfying?

Re: Maarten suggests an OT list, as the PD list has.
Setting up an OT list, for me, just seems like a concession to folks
whose nettiquette would better benefit from a bit of self-restraint.
My impression, backed up by a quick scan of the PD-OT archives, was
always that the list was set up as a concession to a certain eNNtitity
who will remain NNameless, so that all its spam and machine-gibberish
poetry could go there instead of the main list, rather than simply
force-unsubbing it.
The eNNtity doesn't bother with it anymore, but it still looks a bit
more like a catch-all for spam than a lively forum. There was a great
thread on books there last month, but in general any of the worthwhile
topics could have graced the PD list w/o any complaint.
I have never seen a topic on the PD list which was recommended to be
moved to the OT list. On the other hand, I *have* seen people directed
to other lists when asking questions about Max/MSP or other OT software.
I think any civilized user of a specialized, technical discussion list
needs to know for themselves when something is OT. Then they should
really question whether or not we NEED another 30+ postings on the given
topic [be it feeding trolls, M$ spreadsheet compatibility or whatever]
before continuing. If they really believe the group will be enlightened,
they should still mark it [ot], as I have for this potentially
unenlightening post ;-)

My apologies, I should have specified [OT] about ten posts ago. I am
very grateful for the informative and helpful responses I gathered from
the list. While I understand clearly why we want to avoid constant
non-relevant discussions I must add that at times I like to ask
questions regarding more general issues, and I specifically like to ask
the members of this list (that's what you guys get for being so smart ;).
Anyway, I agree with Joern and I realize that banking under Linux Web
browsers can't really be stretched to qualify as an audio-related topic.
I'll be sure to get [OT] in there the next time.
And I was so emphatic about the list's on-topic tendency in my LJ
column... bad Dave, bad Dave... ;-)

Thanks to this OT post I helped someone to have his HP Officejet printer
working... I think it was worth it.
Should we have one OT post per week or so ?...as long as it deals with
SOUND or/and LINUX?... no politics, cars, animals, Operating Sytems than
hang a lot daily, etc...
If someone stops by this audio group to solve an audio problem and
he/she also solves another problem ( Linux related like winmodem or
printer or how to setup Mozilla to print better) then... he/she got more
than expected from this group!... But, for example, if it turns into a
discussion on MS EXCEL... Then it is not audio nor Linux... and should
be stopped or moved somewhere else.

Plus: Traffic on pd-ot is very low, near to non-existant. All
off-topic discussion still happens on Pd's main list.
