Dear all,
My entry for the KVR One Synth Challenge 26
(http://sites.google.com/site/kvrosc/osc-26-zynaddsubfx):
*The Infinite Repeat - The Speeding Train*

As the One Synth Challenge rules dictate, all the instruments, sounds
and noises are generated by ZynAddSubFX. Well, almost, because as Linux
users we have some more choice than on other platforms. So I used 11
ZynAddSubFX-DSSI plug-ins in Qtractor together with 3 separate Yoshimi
instances for the voice patches that use the PADsynth engine (apparently
the DSSI plug-in can't handle those patches). I used seq24 to trigger
everything and Qtractor for mixing and a bit of mastering. Some external
effects were allowed, given they are freely available and don't alter
the original sound (so no phasers, choruses etc.). For this track I used
Calf gates, Calf EQ, SWH SC3 sidechain compressor, AMB panner, Calf
Vintage Delay, Freeverb reverb, Invada Stereo compressor and a fast
lookahead limiter.
Voice patches I used:
- SuperSaw (Paul Nasca)
- Extreme (Will J. Godfrey)
- Bass 2 (Paul Nasca)
- Eeooww (Will J. Godfrey)
- Drumkit (Paul Nasca, tweaked and layered, the snare sound consists of
4 or 5 different snare sounds)
- Snare 1 (M?sterious)
- Soft Kick (AutoStatic)
- 8 Bit Car (M?sterious)
- Soft Ahh (Will J. Godfrey)
- Wind and Surf (Will J. Godfrey)
- Binary Piano 2 (Paul Nasca)
The track was composed and sequenced on the train when commuting to and
from my work. Hence the title.

Wow, impressive. I never heard ZynAddSubFX behave like that. :-) First of
all, less reverb, that one expects from the standard sounds, which makes a
nice change. and then I think I never heard anything so danceable yet from
Zyn.

There are indeed a lot of reverberating voice patches available for
Zyn/Yoshimi. Normally I always disable the reverb effect, but the
patches I used for this track were more or less 'clean' already.

Thanks! The snare drum is actually 4 or 5 snare drums layered on top of
each other.

Better then kedeng kedeng... ;)
I have the feeling that you should let the beat come a bit slower, e.g.
less beats at the beginning, a more slower build up of the beat, could
bring a bit more tension in it. That will fit also better with the
'aaah' patch you use there imo. The song starts to get nice at about
1:10! Maybe a bit more variation when you play that slow lick for the
second time...

whatsoever, state files loaded perfectly.

He he he, I take that as a compliment bearing in mind that guy easily
sells out complete soccer stadiums.

Well, I only had little time to actually organize the song, as always I
struggled not to get lost in nitpicking. But you're right, I should've
worked out a more exciting tension.

Very nice :) Has a definite EBM vibe, along the lines of VNV Nation or
early-ish Covenant tracks.
It's awesome, too, to see that there were a few Linux-based entries to
the KVR OSC challenge -- it'd be brilliant to see one of you take the
prize. I was hoping to come up with something myself, but while I didn't
get that far, I did at least get a chance to dig in to programming
sounds on ZynAddSubFX, so I understand how it all fits together now :)
It's definitely a fantastically powerful piece of software.

Thanks Leigh! Funny, someone on the KVR forum also came up with this VNV
Nation resemblance. Even funnier, I vaguely know the bands and genre but
never listened to any of those acts, except the very early stuff like
Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire.
Guess I'm either getting old or I'm going through a personal electronic
music evolution ;) Just got over New Order, now I'm in the 90's so
within 6 months I hope I'm in Bloody Beetroots/Boys Noize territory :)
