Hi!
This is a music video of a song recorded/mixed/mastered by me using Linux
(AV Linux 2016) with Harrison Mixbus 3.1 along with some Calf and linuxDSP
Plugins. This is also the first production from our new 'Bandshed' studio
and will be released as part of a full EP in a month or so. The band
'Evergreen' is the band my son drums in and 'Come Around' is an original
song written by the singer.
The video was not done with Linux tools and was a school project by two
film students related to one of the other band members, kudos to them on a
great job achieved with very modest tools!

It's funny observing the 'echo and repeat', these kids are huge fans of
Kings of Leon whose first few albums back in the early 2000's were also a
curious throwback to a kind of earthy primal rock n' roll that was
decidedly unhip at the time... Then things went totally primal with the
whole 2-person bands fad with the White Stripes/Black Keys and bands like
that.
I agree with you that it's great to see that original spark of roots music
continue to take flame in so many various incarnations and often in the
most unexpected places whether it's a concert stage or the club around the
corner.

Yeah, the song is simple yet never boring. I like the bass player and
his sound. The guitar sound I'm not a fan of, it's somehow sixties-like
fuzzy but a bit too harsh for my taste.

Hi Chris,
Hehe, well the guys are using Vox AC-30 and AC-15 tube amps, they are the
quintessential British 'harsh 60's sound' amps so I guess they are living
up to their reputation at least even if they are not your cup of tea :)

I do admit the guitars sounds better through my monitors (KRK Rokit 5)
than my simple desktop speakers. Did you EQ the guitar tracks much?

Hi,
No EQ is on the guitars, simply a slightly off-axis SM57 on the cabinet
and an Apex 415 LD Condenser in the room and the room mic is only for a
touch of ambience. I haven't worked with Vox AC amps prior to this and I
kind of agree with you, their sound is an acquired taste, they have earned
their place in guitar amplifier history and been used on a lot of classic
recordings and shows but they are not my favorite either, on the other
hand naturally the guys want to use their own gear and have made
considerable investments in buying these amps so 'the customer is always
right' as they say :).

That's probably the source of the "problem". The SM57 can sound very
harsh on its own and you have to experiment a lot to find a good
recording position (I'm sure you did). Different angles and distances
can result in a totally different tone. In my experience, which isn't
that extensive, I admit, a big condenser as a second mike can soften the
tone considerably, but of course you have to watch out for phase
cancellation then.
I'm sure you know all this, though. Like I said, the harshness wasn't as
pronounced with my monitor speakers, because the mid-bottom end came
accross better. Something to watch out for during mastering when
listening to the mix on as many different setups as possible.
