i wouldn't really call it a drone synth. what i would call it is
really cool. i built it yesterday and spent a little while playing
with it. it might be the first linux synth i've come across that might
meet eno's definition of an instrument as "something with properties
that the body can learn but the mind cannot".

Din it's just great, I've been playing with it the other day and
it's something new but very easy to /learn/.
BTW, to built it using a 64bits arch you just need to download the source
and these dependencies: libsdl1.2-dev, liblo-dev, libjack-dev, tcl8.5-dev,
libircclient-dev (according to Debian and derivatives).
Also I noticed that sometimes when you close din, you'll find a ".din"
directory in your $HOME with the settings/state of your last session,
so you just need to remove it in order to start a fresh new one.
Anything else you need to learn about it, you'll find it in this video:

Well, I started using Linux because I wanted to use Ardour and it's been one
of my best decisions. It's open source so code talks and bullshit walks. A
develper who codes for free owes nothing to anyone.
Also din is pretty bad ass and I'm very greatful for it.

I don't know about Windows users, but it seems that CDM commenters are
(nearly) all like that - one of a long list of reasons I haven't
bothered commenting there for years.

people who think the world owes them ... everything. They just don't seem to
connect with the idea of doing something for fun but making it available to
others with no specific commitment.
How sad it must be to have a mindset where your first thought is 'what do I get
for it' when doing anything.

Generally speaking there are 2 things I don't like:
To do something that you don't like, (\question)
and
Not liking what you are doing. (\question)
One day the pangs of love will point out yourself what the humanity

Or it will araise in yourself a paradox if you were in touch with the
contraries (ie. to kill ... again with \question)
If you are not careful in doing certain things your head is burned, and

What is appaling it's to be convinced yourself that you have to eat (to
rant against) and digest all the degrees (steps) you could bear (\question)
It's only a reality because that's the economy which manages it (and not
necessarily full of life!) (\question)

in defense of CDM commenters, i don't think that this is the mindset
at all, really. i think its more like "look, 98.5% of all possible
users of this stuff do not run linux, so why would you release a cool
creative tool that only runs on a platform that almost nobody uses?"
*if* the percentages are roughly correct (and they likely are), then i
think its a reasonable question to ask. however, the questioner needs
to be able to deal with the answer being something along the lines of
"because i wanted to" or "because i didn't write it for all those
other people" or even "because i wanted other people who use the same
platform as me to have more cool tools" or perhaps even "because i
think its a better platform". i think its fine to ask the question,
but people have to accept the answer too.

din is cool but i experience some trouble with it. Resizing the window
stops sound processing (the current buffer plays back in a loop), and
more often than not also crashes the program. And I get clean sound
only under a lightweight environment like icewm, under KDE 4.5 there's
a permanent (slight but of course annoying) bit of distortion. But that
might just be my aging machine, AthlonXP 1,6 GHz singlecore here...
All of which has kept me from finding out how to actually program this
beast, so far... ;(

configure searches for it.

Actually i think as these examples aren't really useful it's better to
not install them at all... in my rpm spec i just add their sourcecode
to the documentation section.
