This is why the Live CD and various virtualization systems are so powerful in terms of acquiring converts to the linux platform. I'd love to be able to distribute a USB thumb drive loaded with a lightweight (i.e. not Ubuntu Studio) audio environment built around an RT kernel that's boot-ready and enables the user to access the other drives on their machine. Target audience would be anyone with a computer and a midi controller, and at the very least it should come with a bunch of open-licensed soundfonts and some synths. The user experience would be: 1. plug in your USB drive, 2. reboot, 3. plug in your headphones and your MIDI controller 4. rock out with some new sounds and new audio control that your existing device (be it a hardware synth or another PC or Mac-based softsynth) isn't capable of producing/handling. The best part is, this new set of tools is completely open source. And to get back to your home environment, you simply remove the USB drive after you've shut down. I think from a musician perspective, you can get a number of new users to at least understand that the platform has arrived and is not as scary as the MS and Mac music production conglomerate would have you believe (nor is it anywhere near as resource-intensive!). A musician buddy of mine who runs Logic on a 2-year-old Macbook Pro was absolutely shocked at the near-lack of latency I experience with fluidsynth and bristol on my netbook. He was told he'd have to buy a new computer or perform significant upgrades if he wanted to approach the same performance with his rig. Just that argument alone should get some set of users to dip their toes in the water, especially if all the custom configuration steps are eliminated for them. I played a gig last Friday and a guy come up to me afterwards asking about my rig: after I explained what I was using, he began to describe money and time he'd spent on his PC-based system, saying he was afraid to leave the house with it let alone bring it to a dingy club and risk frying it with a spilt beer. I don't know what an engineer would need to have to start cheating on his/her protools environment, but "easy, cheap, reliable, and good-sounding" seems to be a good path to the heart of a performing musician. ----- Luke Peterson

If there is one then you still have the problem of Windows license managers not working in Linux...) 3) With no clear examples of anyone having really significant commercial success using Linux it's hard to imagine very many Avid entry level users making the jump solely on faith alone. More likely in my mind, if they are successful, have cash and are willing to change OS's, is that they become Mac users using one of the many tested and proven recording platforms. (Including Mixbus which isn't expensive.) However that's new hardware, software, learning, etc., which is a big investment. What they do know, before they start, is that it works. The only problem is how long it takes them to get up to speed. Without cash they stick with Avid using Pro-Tools M-Powered and a moderate sound card similar to most people on this list I suspect. Without someone knowledgeable in Linux holding their hands, and based on current lack of documentation for pretty much every Linux distro and sound app, I suspect it would take the average Windows user anywhere from 6 months to a year to really convert to Linux and make it work. There's a lot more to running Linux audio than throwing an Ubuntu installation disk in an old machine. just my excessively negative view on a rainy morning in California. - Mark

I WAS one of those people(PTLE and M-Powered, still ahve the box around here somewhere), and even though I am now using Ardour, and have been for QUITE some time, I STILL have thousands of dollars in plugins, and it is still a major stumbling block for going back to Linux full time as in many cases there aren't acceptable equivalents(Real Time noise reduction is the main one I harp on, but heck, just getting some the are equal to TrackPlug would be a heck of a step). Just because someone is on PTLE doesn't mean that they aren't investing money in plugins and doing serious work. In many cases I could even say that there is a larger problem than just harping on capabilities. One of the major selling points of PT in general(Compared to even Logic, DP, CuBase, etc.) is the fact you can go into just about any studio in the world and it is there. Record a few tracks in your garage, take it to a studio to flesh out and mixdown, works perfect for many people, and I know many people that have this exact workflow. AATranslator is a great tool in this regards from what I have heard but is both closed source and Windows only, so it is very limiting at the same time. Nothing against those folks, I am immensly glad they came out with such a tool. Are you looking to compare only the built in PT plugins, or are you looking to compare all the plugins that CAN be run in PT, which is a heck of a list obviously as I am sure you know. Seablade
