i'm new to pro-audio world and i need some advice about
how to setup a studio.
i got my PC setup with an RME HDSP-9652 + SPDIF A/D D/A converter.
Ardour works great. i'm planning to purchase a FocusRite
OctoPre/ADAT and a bunch of microphones.
i think i need speakers too.
Is there anything like digital speakers or digital amps which
can accept ADAT directly from my linux box and turn it into
sound? Or do i need to convert ADAT to analogue and plug
that into a conventional amp/speaker system?
Considering how much care i'm taking to record sound digitally,
without noise, it seems like i should also take care that
the speakers can actually playback my recordings without
too much distortion.
Anyone have any recommendations?

You can get monitors that accept SPDIF, but your choice will be limited.
If you get decent active monitors that take balanced analogue you wont
have any noise problems.
I patch my monitors through a (balanced) patchbay and even with the output
turned right up I cant hear any noise. A 0dB signal at that level is
unpleasent.

You mean a balanced analogue connection to the amplifier? Or the
amp uses balanced cables to the speaker also?

You can also get away with slower hardware, right now I'm running my whole
studio off my pIII 833 laptop machine with the quattro interface via
usb. I don't do much with jack and softsynths (except composing in
csound), mostly what I'm doing is using linux to develop samples, then I
load then into my asrx pro and use rosegarden4 to sequence and sweep to
record and edit.

A speaker or amp with digital inputs is only a D-A converter + amplifier
in a box. If you've invested in a good D-A converter, you just need a good
(conventional, analog) power amplifier and speakers.
Isn't ADAT 8-track? If you want to listen to that on speakers it will have
to be mixed to stereo, and if you want to do as much as possible digitally
you should do that mixing digitally, so your final chain for monitoring
will be:
stereo S/PDIF -> D-A converter -> amplifier -> speaker.
You could get active speakers which combine the last two stages.

Hi,
Monitors
In the control room (printing, mixing) we use a pair
of cheap Alesis M1Active, I think they were $600.00.
They're not the best monitors but I know the room and
the monitors. They work great for me. They're tough as
rocks, we've never blown one and there's been a couple
engineers that cut their teeth on them.
For years we ran those little N1 or whatever it was
that every studio in the world used. They were the
most gawd awful things. I hated them so much that I've
blocked their names from my memory. They'd tear your
ears apart and you'd experience hearing fatigue. On
top of their ripping your head off they'd blow up
everytime a new engineer ran the room. Well, not
everytime but often enough to piss me off.
In our mastering room we run a pair of Mackie HR824.
They cost about $1,200.00 a pair. These are pretty
damned nice monitors.
When we purchased the HR824 monitors, my two studio
business partners and I went to a pro audio shop with
a handful of CDs that we're all familiar with. We did
comparisons on six or eight brands and a couple models
for all the brands. Nothing compared to the HR824.
There really wasn't much to talk about.
The only brand we didn't get to run an A B comparison
on was Genelec. But they're about double the price.
Out of our range.
Microphones
If you need one real good microphone that can get you
miles of results consider the Neumann M 147 tube. It's
about $1,600.00 USD. It's a great microphone for
percussion, accoustic and electric guitar, no good for
kick drums, good for vocals. I almost always run the M
147 through an Avalon Vt 737sp.
With some vocalists I've experienced difficult
harmonic distortion or some damned thing with that
combo. Then there are those who sound perfect. Maybe
it's the combining of two tube devices in one chain.
The first time I did a serious percussion session with
the M 147 we tracked about 20 different drums and
various percussion instruments. After laying all the
tracks, the client came into the control room, heard
the mix and said, "Ron, I've never heard such
beautiful drums." I'd like to take all the credit for
creating that magic but the truth is that mic and
preamp did alot of the work.
Kick drum, AKG D12 E it's the old square one. I think
it cost me $200.00 used. It sounds better than the new
egg shaped model. Run through the Vt 737sp and it is
killer.
Snare, Sure Beta 57
Overheads, Sure SM81 which are OK if I ran a bigger
budget I'd replace them.
Toms, EV N/D 408 or something like that, they're the
eggish shaped things on the swivel mounts. I actually
like them alot.

Heh, thats what I use in my studio, there not amazingly flat, but they go
pretty low, and like Ron said they are really tough.
They are also not unacceptably ugly, which I appreciate after staring at
them for hours.
We have genelec and yamaha actives (can't remember model numbers) at
work, which are much smaller, but dont sound as flat to me. The genelecs
are more expensive the yamahas about the same. We also have some midfield
monitors, but they are in a different league.

We use a pair of JR-149's. They are 1970's monitors in cylindrical
aluminium housings, designed by Jim Rogers after he left the Rogers
company (shades of Leo Fender...). Apart from the housings, which are
designed to reduce the out of phase internal reflections found in
square speakers, they are identical to the Rogers LS3/5a, the 'BBC
monitor'.
Why am I bothering to tell you all this? Because they are old and they
get mistaken for novelty speakers, they are really cheap. We got ours
from a car boot sale (flea market) but you can find plenty on eBay.
The only caveat I would add is to make sure you get a matching pair
with working drivers. Because the drivers are the same as as the
ultra-collectable LS3/5a and are no longer made, spare drivers go for
very high prices.

me--I've since hidden a suck button under the desk and

Steve mentioned flat response, I don't know where the
Mackies land in that department. The transition from
bass to mid to high is like silk and everything is
crystal clear. At the same time the sound is very full
which causes me to really listen twice. I'm fairly
comfortable with the Mackie's now but there was a
learning period where I was nervous.
I've never listened to a pair of JR-149's. They sound

I've never listened to a pair of JR-149's.
They sound
interesting
I don't think you can beat them at the price we paid - £8 the pair,
which is about US$12 I think. Like the LS3/5a, they are not full
range monitors, so you probably need the optional subwoofer if you
are going to use them other than for close-up monitoring.
I believe the original LS3/5a was designed to be small enough to fit
in BBC outside broadcast vans, with the aim of replicating the low
frequency roll-off that typical consumer equipment of the time had.
Today, audiophiles often use them with a tall, matching subwoofer
under each speaker.

I've carefully listened to the Tannoy monitors. I
guess the most deterministic way to reach a conclusion
is to compare them with as many other current
"greatest" monitors as you possibly can. Any pro audio
shop should have a good selection that's hooked up to
a switch box. I'm suggesting that a trip across town
to perform A B comparisons on monitors is mandatory.
For all the money that's to be made in the music
business, I'll be using what I've got until I'm to old
to remember where I put them.

Another good contender in the sub-$1000 range is the "little" mackie -
the HR624. I'm strongly considering buying a pair. They have deeper and
tighter bass than anything else I've heard in that price range, and the
mids and treble are balanced and not nearly as harsh as some other
monitors. SOme of the Event monitors are OK for the money but I found
their treble to be really nice on first impression, but a bit grating
after a while. I also checked out a bunch of KRK monitors and hated every
one. The Roland DS-90 seemed worth another listen, but the stupid store
had them rigged to a computer with no CD player so I couldn't hear them
with any familiar material.
All that said, I'm considering just buying a pair of PSB home stereo
speakers because they sound so damn good for so much less money.
Seriously, the little PSB Alpha is better than half the monitors you'll
find in stores.
Need an amp though.

I already have a pair of royd audio speakers and a scott amp... So far I'm
happy with them, but I heard that hifi speakers are quite different from
nearfield monitors... Do you think I should stay with my setup or go for a
cheap pair of nearfields would improve it?

i have a pair of active reveals with a matching sub.
they are quite nice, and in price/performance they beat the shit out of
all the other one i listened to.
of course they are not really high-end, and they sound little held-back
- the mix does not jump out at you, but otoh i find them rather pleasant
to use for prolonged periods. they are precise enough for my needs - my
only grudge is they could be a little nastier in the upper mids, i
suspect they tend to gloss over problems a little.
disclaimer: i have a pretty dead room with a bookshelf in the rear.
might be different in a harder room.
the sub otoh is total crap (way too high x-over point, you can clearly
locate it which i find pretty annoying, and it's not very quick either)
but i only use it to detect subharmonic garbage in my mixes and then
eliminate it :)
imho near-fields never really cut it if you want to know exactly what's
going on below 50 hz...

I've never played around with this mic, but I've heard some cool things
about it. How does it compare to the Sennheiser e602? I just picked
one of those up, and I'm amazed at how easy it is to get a really think
kick sound out of it, even with my mediocre preamps.

I've been playing around recently with a pair of MXL 990's I bought.
Mostly I bought them because I needed a new pair of condensers for
overheads, but the $69 price tag was a factor as well. I must say I'm
surprised at how good their performance is. Granted, I wouldn't take
them over a nicer matched stereo pair, but if you're looking at price,
I think it'd be hard to beat these.

Promise not to laugh before reading further...
They're discontinued now, but Radio Shack Pro Instrument 3032 mics are
very useable on toms. Many, many drummers swear by them. Again, a lot
of this comes from the price tag - they run about $15 each. But sheesh
- who can pass up a useable mic for $15 a pop?? They're fun to mess
around with, and they come with nice clips for drum attachment.
If you're into the money spending things, lots of drummers tend to like
the Sennheiser Evolution tom mics for their tone - I think they're model
e604.

One thing about microphones is you can't do the 30
trial and return if you don't like them. Retailers
like guitar center have the 30 day no questions asked
return policy for many devices.
I have rented micorphones and that's a good to test
drive before having your wallet vacumed.

There are now powered studio monitors that will take digital out and
need no external amplification; I think that'll be my next studio
purchase when there's the cash!
I have not yet gone into the local Guitar Center to listen to them
yet as that would just make me frustrated at this time! Check out

if you're thinking of those "digital speakers" which feed some special
digital signal directly to the speaker cones and let the membrane do the
low-pass filtering, i think they didn't catch on, and i'm sure they have

There are now powered studio monitors that will take digital out and
need no external amplification; I think that'll be my next studio
purchase when there's the cash!

True, but I don't use the SPDIF stuff on my Delta1010 for much now;
if I can use the SPDIF for the monitors, I can open up another pair
of analog outs for my patchbay.

Exactly! The thing that has me considering new monitors in the first
place is that my monitor amp finally gave up the ghost - it had been
amplifying for 22 years, I got my money's worth! - but now rather than
dump the money into a new amp to power my aging (and not very flat)
speakers, getting a pair of powered monitor speakers seems to be the
way to approach this. Being able to free up outs 1&2 on the Delta just
seems like a bonus.
BTW, on the subject of mics, is anyone else a fan of the Oktava MK319's?
I find them a bit harsh for vocals, but love 'em for drum overheads and
acoustic guitar work.

Sure, I also go digitally, using ADAT, out of my Pro Tools setup, and save
the analog I/Os for other tasks.
Should I ever have a working Linux system based on the HDSP 9652, I'll have
no analog I/Os, so I will also use one of it's ADAT interfaces the same way.

i'm new to pro-audio world and i need some advice

how to setup a studio.
i got my PC setup with an RME HDSP-9652 + SPDIF A/D D/A converter.
Ardour works great. i'm planning to purchase a FocusRite
OctoPre/ADAT and a bunch of microphones.

You've gotten some other good answers, so I'll only add a couple of specific
ideas:
1) Don't get speakers with built in D/A's. They usually make compromises
that aren't sonically the best. Consider a good quality stereo D/A for your
main outs, and then go from there to your amps and speakers. Active monitors
(I.e. - the power amp built into the speaker cabinet) are OK if you like the
sound, but make sure you can bypass that amp. What you like today might not
be what you like in the future.
2) Don't forget your headphone paths - mixing & driving to musicians is
pretty important too. Drummers need different mixes than singers, etc.
(Well, drummers are just different from most people...) ;-)
3) You WILL get as many recommendations for studio monitors as you talk to
people. It's the nature of ears and humans. Currently I'm using a fairly
nice set of NHT A10-Pro's that I got really cheap. ($300 for the pair
including the power amp, cables, etc.) They're pretty nice when I turn them
up a bit. A compatriot absolutely loves the Adam S3, but at $3K/speaker
they're a bit beyond my means right now...
4) Continue to buy equipment that supports word clock like your (and my) RME
cards do. Down the road this can yield a big improvement when you start
using it, and it can simplify overall clocking anyway.
Considering how much care i'm taking to record sound digitally,
without noise, it seems like i should also take care that
the speakers can actually playback my recordings without
too much distortion.
That's the ticket...
