hi all,
In between smashing flies that came sitting on my hands while
typing, and taking cold showers (we have some heath wave here)
I wrote an auto-wah LADSPA plugin. It's available from the
usual place:

Since I'm not a guitarist I'll need user feedback to improve it.

I applied the effect to a self-recording of an electric guitar track in
audacity and in this case it does not seem to have the functionality I
expect from an Auto-Wah.
I don't have a midi pedal to check whether the sweeping of frequencies
will work, but you should really add automatic functionality for this also,
that the user can turn off/on, with a relevant control of the period involved.
This is what you can find in other Auto-Wahs. Without this kind of control the
plugin becomes near to useless for offline effects processing.
Let me if you decide to fix this and I will try it out again. I will try out
your other LADPSA plugins too.

I had trouble with this, too. See my other post for "good" settings. The
trick seems to be that the "Drive" and "Decay" settings are tricky and
typically have a very small range of settings where they are sensible.

If by depth you mean variation between heel and toe on the wah (sweep
range of the cutoff frequency) -- yes. In fact, it has too much for a
guitar... which is why it's a good idea to limit the range.
But yes, adding it to something pre-recorded will be different depending
on your attacks in the music. Also, according to Fons, the Drive setting
depends very much on the strength of the input signal.
OTOH, the resonance is a little narrow for my tastes. When the cutoff
freq. is low -- it's missing too many highs. When the cutoff freq. is
high... it cuts off too many lows. But this is just a taste issue.
Talking with Fons, he set the Q on the resonance to match a hardware wah
that he was working with. (Fons also said he would add a Q-parameter in a
future release.)

The 'Drive' setting is just a gain factor before the level/envelope
detector. You will have to adjust it to the input level you provide
to the plugin. It has a range of 40 dB which should cover even the
most extreme cases.
Decay has range of 50ms to 5s (with an exponential control law,
mid = 0.5s) which seems sensible to me. In most cases you'd use
the left half of the range but if you have long sustainded notes
on which you want a slow resonance frequency decay the right half
could provide what you need.

Hello, I've packaged this plugin for Archlinux, it's now in the AUR
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29624
btw it would be good if in 'make install' the necessary files are
copied to $(DESTDIR)/pathtowherecopyfiles rather than
simply /pathtowherecopyfiles ; this surely makes packaging much easier
on Arch
and also btw, good plugin - I've used it with good results with the
settings suggested by Gabriel :)
