I have a working plugin (called "dirg")
that provides a UI by hosting a
web server which you access in the browser. It provides a grid UI either
via a Novation Launchpad, or in the browser if you don't have a
Launchpad. Web UIs definitely have a ton of wins (think tablets, remote
control (i.e. network transparency), etc.)
I also have a complete LV2 "message" system based on Atoms which is
compatible with / based on the event extension. Atoms, and thus
messages, can be serialised to/from JSON (among other things,
particularly Turtle).
Any of them available to have a look at?
Currently dirg provides the web server on its own
with no host
involvement, but every plugin doing this obviously doesn't scale, so
some day we should figure this out... first we need an appropriately
high-level/powerful communication protocol within LV2 land (hence the
messages stuff).
Where do you stand with priorities now? That sounds like something
very much worth investing time in.
You see, one thing I'm puzzled about is that you have beginnings of
what could be significant part of a potentially successful cloud
computing audio app, and then you talk about how donations don't even
pay your rent :)

IMO it's easier to find an existing or create a new web app for
Facebook or LinkedIn :)
But it's definitely an idea worth thinking about.

don't provide perspective and they don't expose connections between
people right away. I've served several years as social hub for free
graphics software developers and I can tell you that while email and
Jabber and IRC and whatnot, as well as F2F meetings at LGM, LAC etc
are the ultimate communication means, it's very important to stay
tuned to all things happening. For same reason I woudn't limit such a
dream service to audio developers, because audio is related to video
(audio effects in NLE, JACK compatibility), and video is related to
things like static graphics and video drivers (likewise audio is
related to kernel, ALSA and FFADO), and so it all is intertwined.
AFAIK, Linux.com was supposed to become a kind of social service.
Maybe it's worth investigating what their plans are.

I do agree that it should be open for related fields, but there should
be some barriers IMHO, simply because I don't think closed source
non-linux development would add anything (just an example, because of
that Traktor review. I'd be pissed to see stuff like this).

It's a valid concern. Updating status of projects is the last thing
developers usually do. OTOH, twitting/denting about what they are up
to is a very, very usual thing, because these services make it so easy
to share and are rather tuned for sharing what's important in very
little time (140 symbols limit). So it's a question of implementation.
In other words: if you can't do something with few clicks, it won't
work :)

You mean Create Digital Music's feed? Personally I find CDM a great
resource for broadening horizons. Especially since Peter Kirn does
quite a bit of PR for Ardour, not mentioning their work on open source
hardware. I'd hate to see the community closed to things happening
outside it.

Nothing about CDM, I know that Peter Kirn covers free software, but
there are plenty of ways to get informed about commercial offerings on
other OSes, we don't need another one. This doesn't mean 'closing up to
the outside' but focusing on the task at hand.
I do think the traktor thing was just a mistake. Something seems wrong
on CDM's side, the Traktor thing is filed under
"Create Digital Music » Linux" and some MAX/MSP/Live stuff under "Create
Digital Music » open-source". Maybe http://planet.linuxaudio.org/ would
be enough already if it was a bit moderated, better known and devs
blogging a bit more.

Email can work without clicks and is really easy. Maybe I'm just old
(I'm not), but I sure won't start twittering and don't even know what
denting is but we agree that it should be simple to keep others

That is more or less the point IMO. Yet I see the two sides of the
coin: on one side people don't blog about what they are doing since a.
it's too demanding (here micro-blogging kind of things would help) and
b. if what they did is not yet in a presentable state they won't talk
about it. I think it would be better to have some kind of very
informal service instead for "internal use only" (with this I don't
mean it shouldn't be public).
The main problem from another developer's perspective however is
different: I want to know who is working on what, so I don't really
need an "activity stream", but rather something that is organized in
some way (timestamps may help however). E.g., I want to know who is
working on LV2 hosts, who is working on audio programming languages,
etc. It would be cool if a search could be done on a tag-basis, so to
avoid useless hierarchies. The two things (activity stream and
"organized content", let's say) are not mutually exclusive, yet I
don't know of any such service.
Coming back to earth, I think a wiki would be fine if people get
involved... but they won't, I'm pretty sure... unless it gets big
enough (good night!)
(Jabber/XMPP is a case apart, I think it is a superior kind of thing,
since it can be quite easily integrated into whatever service you may
offer... but this is all another story?).

I'll throw one out today about the UI stuff, anyway. Qt plugins embedded
in Ingen working at least somewhat via a library, with minimal nuisance

Stefano wanted to know whether someone was starting something he was
interested in because he might want to contribute, if I understood him
correctly.
But I don't think it is really common practice (or even good form?, but
that's very debatable) to announce something if you are not ready to
release some code, many things can happen in-between (loss of interest,
unexpected -heh- lack of time, realization that there may be better
options...) and a premature announcement never fulfilled might end up
being worse than no announcement at all, since people might refrain to
take on a similar project to avoid duplicating efforts. A release, in
whichever stage, at least shows some commitment behind the project.
For released software there's already LAA (+planet mirror), as Robin says.
For unreleased one, I meant with my previous message that perhaps it
might be better to give a shout here: "hey, I miss such and such and I
am considering putting some hours into making it happen. A search for
similar projects didn't yield any results, has anyone something going
already along this line?"
But I dunno, it was just a minimum-effort proposal, lazy bugger that I
am. I see how you might perhaps, maybe, want to jump in something even
if you never thought of starting it, if you find its declaration of
intentions sufficiently inspiring.
