Hi,
these days I really was amazed, because while discussing the
new Virus TI in the Access mailing list, I was told that the
Virus TI will do audio over a 1.1 USB bus.
Is it really true that USB 1.1 can do audio, and if so, are
there any USB soundcards out there which one could recommend?
I did a search in the archives of this list, and found a
recommendation of Clemens Ladisch that the Edirol UA-30 is
working well.
Unfortunately, it seems that it is discontinued. So, are there
any …
[View More]further devices one of you uses successfully?
I ask because I have a Dell Inspiron notebook and the audio
connection is simply lousy; if there were any USB 1.1
soundcard which will work well on my Gentoo box, I guess I'd
immediately buy one!
I put some system specs below. Lets see what I'm looking for
in detail:
* Audio in and out, both stereo
* Mic in
* Headphones out (not needed necessarily)
* MIDI not necessarily required because I already use an
Edirol UM-1S
Furthermore, what would you like to recommend as plugs? What
are the (dis)advantages between cinch and 3.5mm plugs?
Thanks a lot for your thoughts,
ce

I asked this question on the ALSA user's list with no response (yet!)
Thought maybe someone on this group may have come across this.
Can't get midisport8x8 to work. I think that the firmware is not loading.
Some notes:
---
I have usbfs running (the dir is there), installed the hotplug and
fxload packages from linux-hotplug and "make install" the
midisport_firmware-0.5.

Midisport does not show up anywhere. So, I fear that fxload and/or
hotplug scripts are not working.
How can I check this? And, how can I enable these to work (if this is
the problem)?
thanks much!

Hi
I release:
http://personal.telefonica.terra.es/web/soudfontcombi/mcontrol-0.1.03.tar.gz
mcontrol (Use alsa-seq to capture MIDI Control messages and MIDI Pitch Bend
messages, and changes this message to ... whatever you want).
This new version adds System Exclusive messages, improves the control editor
and fix minor bugs.

I just had a crazy idea ... Sorry if this is off topic a bit. Does
anyone know what frequency ranges bats use? Would a 96KHz 24bit card be
able to capture anything useful from their sounds?
I was just wondering what it would sound like to get a recording of the
bats eating bugs in the evenings in my backyard and then slow it down
enough to get into a human audible frequency range.
Thanks,
Eric Rz.
PS just to make this somewhat linux related, if 96KHz is not enough, are
there any alsa …

Hello Folks;
I am a linux enthusiast, and software engineer who would like to start using my Linux laptop as a live performance tool.
I am a bassist, and want to be able to process, sample and loop my instrument through my laptop in a live situation.
I am just beginning my research into the available software and hardware, and would greatly appreciate any information. Especially on hardware - what would be the best usb/ firewire interface for live performance?
Following is my setup:

7-string MTD custom fretless, strung B-E-A-D-G-C-F
Some stomp boxes: MXR Stereo chorus, Boss RC-20 loop station, Old Roland Phaser
At this point, my idea is to string it up like this:
Bass -> Stomp Boxes -> usb/firewire interface -> Laptop -> Amplifier / PA
Thanks for your time folks - I look forward to your reply!

This is a great idea, where it should be easy to make a general
library for other hosts (not necesarrily running Qt) making use
of those UI's with the help of some ipc-tricks.
The great question is: Does there exist many ladspa-ui files?
In case there are, the motivation to make such a library is quite high.
Mathias, I have CC this to the dev-list. If you answer, please

That solved the errors in vsthost.cpp
But there is a similar problem in dssi-vst.cpp also
g++ -g3 -I/usr/local/include -L/usr/lib -Wall vsthost.cpp
remotevstclient.o -o vsthost -L. -lremoteplugin -ljack -lasound
vsthost.cpp: In function `int openJack(const char*)':
vsthost.cpp:379: error: ISO C++ forbids initialization in array new
vsthost.cpp:396: error: ISO C++ forbids initialization in array new
And i have already made another patch that is missing from the source.
That solves this bug.
g++ -g3 -Wall remotepluginclient.cpp -c
remotepluginclient.cpp: In member function `void
RemotePluginClient::syncStartup()':
remotepluginclient.cpp:116: error: `errno' undeclared (first use this

The high price of CMJ must be because they are greedy... because
the CMJ is an academic/professional journal. This massive open
source activity by non-professionals is very new business, and
publishers should somehow change their pricing policies.
I would suggest that last 4 years could be high price for professionals
who really need to read the papers on time and that older than
4 years could be sold cheaply or (why not) placed freely available.
I picked up papers of those last 4 years from digital library
(was it Ebesco or Ingenta service). Check if you have access to
them at public library. There were a few interesting papers which
I could give privately if somebody would like to write open source
software on physical modelling (or anything).
However, the 4 years is not enough. I'm still looking for 1982
FDN reverb paper by M. Puckette (PD author, yes?) and for 1983
spatializing paper by Moore. And many more CMJ papers.
Anyone has ICMC papers in pdf format and could copy them to me?
Like years 1980-2004? I have no money to buy them but would like to
go through the papers. Well, somebody of us should go through the
papers, otherwise those ideas may not end up to open source software.
