I built 2.6.10 with the realtime-lsm patch pointed to by Lee
and things are looking good. I did modprobe realtime gid=(my gid,
one user machine) and started jackd using qjackctl as I did as
root on my old kernel and got about the same results...
...as far as I can tell.
I cannot connect PD to jack for some reason now.
I usedto run both PD and Jackd as root. PD drops its root status
after setting up scheduling (I think) but now I get a seg fault
if I have jackd running as me, and pd as me, or pd runs with Jackd
as me if I start PD as root; but then PD cannot connect to jackd.
What do I do now? Im anxious to test jackd and this realtime kernel!
Thanks!

Hello Everybody - hoping your Old year is Excellent
Is there a list that I could look at that would show all necessary
and unnecessary services in terms of Linux Audio. If possible I
would also like to see which files are to be editted for real fine
tuning of my workstation.
Best wishes for the New Year and Thank you for any responses!
Bye
mark

Yes, of course the RT kernel is a lot better, but I agree with Jack that
it's important to have good realtime support in the base kernel.
Previous Linux kernels were much worse than the proprietary
alternatives, so having a kernel release that's as good or better is a
huge milestone. Can you imagine Linux owning the server space the way
it does now, if you had to patch the kernel to get superior performance?
Linux got huge in this area because you could take it and install apache
out of the box on a spare machine and get better server performance than
the proprietary guys.
Anyway, everyone's goal is to get the performance of the RT kernel out
of the stock kernel anyway. So we should figure out what else needs to
go upstream before 2.6.11. I think in order for it to get much better
we need the softirq and hardirq threading stuff upstream and turning the
might_sleeps into preemption points - IOW the original aspects of VP.
I would still like to see a comparison between RT and DESKTOP. I think
it's reasonable that we could get PREEMPT_DESKTOP like performance out
of the vanilla kernel very soon.

Dear list,
I am currently trying to set up an RME multiface under Linux. I am
running a 2.6.9 kernel with ACPI patches, the Nitro 4/Con Kolivas
patches, and the latest LSM module. I am running ALSA 1.0.8rc1 compiled
as modules from Source.
Most things work well. I have Jack running in realtime with very few
Xruns. PD and Audacity also work OK so far as I can tell.
I have three problems:
1/ The no audio can be heard from the Multiface unless the HDSPmixer app
has been opened once.
2/ The inputs meters on the HDSPmixer are constantly showing around -7dB
even though there is no input.
3/ There are constant clicks when playing from DVD, regardless of
whether I use Xine or Mplayer, OSS or ALSA. Playback is fine if I use
the internal Intel sound card.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Jamie
I have a knoppix installation that includes
rosegarden2 and OSS drivers.
The midiports are not recognized upon bootup. How can
I configure/check the midi port configuration for the
OSS drivers?
Yes I know that rosegarden4 blows away rosegarden2,
and ALSA is the way to go, but since knoppix includes
rosegarden2 and OSS, I think it would be easier for me
to get this working than switch to ALSA and new
software.
I have tried several midi interfaces/soundcards which
I know are supposed to work (ISA, PCI, and USB)
Any advice would be much appreciated!

There haven't been to many songs recently so here's
another one:

Something is wrong with this master. It sounds like
the limiter peaks. It could be the source but I was
having the same problems on another one of the songs.
Doesn't matter enough to fix because my music doesn't
pay any of the bills.

I've used a compaq laptop that I was setting up with Suse Linux 9.1 for
amd_64, and it runs a lot cooler than I expected, and for those apps that
have native 64 bit version, you definitely do get a performance boost.
So if you can afford it, a dual 64 bit system would be a real powerhouse
for an audio workstation, but it can be difficult to get some hardware
working, the 64 bit laptop mobos use a problematic yenta socket, so pcmcia
might not work at all.
Hey there listers,
Does anyone have any experience with Athlon 64 processors? Do
those extra 32 bits come in handy for audio work? I'm looking to
move away from my laptop for most of my audio work, and I like
the flexibility of using a desktop. From what I hear, because we
can compile most of our software, linux seems to use the athlon
64 much better than windows, but I could be wrong. Any thoughts?
