Hi
I need a basic midi interface, and I'm thinking about either the M-Audio
USB Midisport Uno or the Audiotrak USB Midisport Uno. Which one should I
choose (and why) for use with my debian/unstable/2.6.9 system? I would
prefer an interface the works as out of the box as possible...
Also are there any major disadvantages with usb interfaces, and what else
would be an option in the same price range?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Hi Stefano,
I'm a newbie in Linux-Audio world, but maybe this can help you: using
"alsamixer hw:x" where x is your card hardware id (mounting 2 cards you
should have hw:0 and hw:1) be sure that integrated VIA card is setted to get
clock signal from s/pdif input.
If it's setted to internally generate clock signal you will have a drift
between VIA and SB card, causing "clicks" you are hearing.
Hope it helps!

Deffinately do NOT choose midiman. I have a Duo and I learned that
midisport does not comply to usb standards and is therefor not
supported by linux.
I dont know anything about Audiotrak.

hi
i'm trying to connect a midi keyboard Yamaha PSS-790
to the game port of my sound card SB Audigy , using
a Y cable that claims to support SB.
I'm running Planet on fc1, ALSA 1.0.4,
rosegarden, qjctl, fluidsynth, i can
actually play midi files into them. i
also have a integrated soundcard with
midi capabilities but it's disabled in the BIOS.
here's some printout
lsmod seems fine to me (snd-seq-midi etc.)

Why it's this ugly word [disabled] ?
maybe shall i add some lines to

Hello -
I just installed a new HDSP multiface with PCI on a PlanetCCRMA/FC3
box, kernel 2.6.8.1-1.520.2vS7.ll, ALSA 1.07 (homemade rpms) and am
not seeing any output levels on HDSPmixer (bottom row) despite
actually hearing the signal I expect (sounds great).
Modules/firmware load beautifully, I can route signal with HDSPmixer
as expected, adjust levels, etc, just no visual feedback from the
outputs row either with vu levels or changing peak values.
Also on mixer channels that do show vu's (input and internal, top and
middle rows respectively) the yellow peak indicators appear only
randomly every 2-3 seconds or so, sort or popping around without any
clear relation to the signal peak. Something's not right here.
/sbin/lspci:

cat /proc/pci:

IRQ 5.
Master Capable. Latency=255.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xec800000 [0xec80ffff].
"proc/interrupts says the card is on it's own interrupt, IRQ 5.

I've installed (maybe not sucessfully) wine 20041201, fst 1.6 and
jack_fst-1.2.
I'm using jack-0.99
When I try and execute jack_fst such as:
#jack_fst Crystal.dll
I receive the following error:
err:dosmem:setup_dos_mem Cannot use first megabyte for DOS address
space, please report
can't connect to JACK
I assume that the first error message is from wine. Is that true? I
haven't found a thread or docs on the wine list about this error.
(I assume the 2nd error is because of the first reported error)
Anyone come across this?

I'm interested in rendering some organ works electronically. The first
step of course is to get the music in the computer, e.g. in MIDI
format.
The piece I'm working on you can see at
http://www.xmission.com/~fugalh/in_dulci_jubilo.pdf
I can play this piece well enough. I don't have a MIDI pedalboard but
the pedal line is easy enough to add later. But as you can see the
music is in multiple voices, and I would like to instrument each voice
differently. I have tried recording them one at a time, in an ensemble
style, but even when I follow a metronome it ends up sounding like
trash. I have decided that either I need to work on my ensemble
playing or I am going about it the wrong way. Maybe I should just
record the manuals and try to separate out the parts into separate
tracks as a post-processing task. That's going to be a problem when I
try to do something else that requires more than one manual since I
only have one MIDI keyboard. Also, as much as I'd like to, I don't
have the time to learn each piece I'd like to render to the point of
perfect performance like I have this one.
What do you all do in this situation? The same issues naturally apply
to other styles of music as well, e.g. choral or orchestral.

No. I still use kernel 2.6.7 with Ingo realtime-preempt patch (my video card,
a nvidia card, don't work well with mm kernel series, required by newer
patchs) and realtime-lsm module for capabilities. JACK version 0.99.13. ALSA
1.0.7. If you need I can try a new version of kernel...
I use jack with --enable-posix-shm and --with-default-tmpdir=/mnt/jack, so I
add the following lines in my fstab:
tmpfs /mnt/jack tmpfs defaults 0 0
ramfs /dev/shm ramfs defaults 0 0
My buffer size is 128, with a latency of 5.33ms. My jack command line
(qjackctl):
/usr/bin/jackstart -R -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p128 -n2

I need to sync video playback and midi composition. I guess I should
first ask if anyone knows of midi/audio apps that have video playback
builtin -- that would be preferable.
I don't know of any -- and that's why I am asking this 2nd question: if
anyone knows of midi composition apps that can sync using SMPTE/MTC to a
video playback app -- which would also have to have SMPTE sync capabilities.
This seems to be a hole in the audio caps of Linux apps. Or, am I way
off base?
