Saving 3 man hours is important to us. But, it would depend on what I
saved and how much it cost me. For instance, if the 3 man hours were
spent acquiring knowledge that I could potentially use later, I often
spend the time to acquire this knowledge (of course, depending on the
value of the knowledge.) If it's related to something that you are
refering to (a feature that doesn't work -- a feature that doesn't work
and looks like it'll never work, historical record of a system) then I
try to stop asap and attempt to recoup the investment.

Anyone having problems here. My devices no longer show up. Audio works fine.
Note that
1. /proc/asound/cards shows ALL devices
2. cat /dev/midi# show events from the keyboard. The keyboard is through a USB
driver. I get snd-usb-audio install error from modprobe on bootup. Attempt to
rmmod say it is in use.
However: Kmid shows no devices, neither does Rosegarden.
Jackqtl has no active connections but show devices on it patchboard.
Connections made here are "silent".
Audio is working without a hitch.

PD has a object called fiddle~. You can run the mic
into this and (among other things) gives you the midi
note which correspond to keys on a keyboard. Or you
can run to output into mtof if oyu preffer to see Hz.

Here is a layout.

Hope this helps!

I appreciate all the suggestions. I can appreciate the fact that some
think it is 'stupid' 'cause you should just tune it to what you like or
what you need at the time.
However, I'm tuning this violin to lean to play. Since I'm learning i want
to be as close to a common tuning as i can, so that i learn the fingering
correctly.
Thanks all,

Is this device happening? Does anyone know the status?

Now that the Open Labs products are out, it would be nice to know the
Mediastation is a going concern.

If Linux doesn't solve your computing problem, you need a different problem.
Hullo,
A while ago I was having trouble with my US428 hanging my system,
usually directly after I tried to start JACK. Then lots of
school-type stuff came up, and I set it aside for a while, and
just used the built-in soundcard. Now that finals are over, I'm
looking at tryint to get it to work again. So I downloaded the
2.6.10-rc2 source, applied the mm3, usx2y-0.8.7, and rt2 patches,
used make-kpkg to make a nice debian-friendly package, and
installed the kernel and modules. I also got the realtime-lsm
module, and the package that has the scripts to set it up all
nice and easy. So I boot it up, and aside from my touchpad not
working, everything looks good. So I tail -f /var/log/messages,
and plug in my US428. It seems to load the firmware and start
us428control the way it's supposed to, and I can even start jack
and run the xmms-jack out plugin and listen to music through it.
Seems to work great. But as soon as I start ardour, I get this:
kernel: Sequence Error!(hcd_frame=1152ep=10out;wait=120,frame=124).
kernel: Most propably some urb of usb-frame 120 is still missing.
kernel: Cause could be too long delays in usb-hcd interrupt handling.
and qjackctl up and disapears, and ardour gives an error about
being booted by jack.
but I'm pretty stoked at at least my computer didn't hang(as it
used to), until I unplug the device, and do some other stuff, and
then it hangs. So I guess I'm in a slightly better position than
before, but I'm getting pretty close to selling this, and saving
up for one of the RME pcmcia interfaces.
thanks for any ideas,
-spencer
Heyall,
About one year ago, I posted here about my intention to batch-slice the Musical
Instrument Samples from the University of Iowa
(http://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS.html) in order to turn them into the first
free orchestral multisampled instruments library (it ain't so proud as it
seems). This has been quite a hard task for a newcomer like me, so I've decided
to divide this work in progressive steps: in order to become more confident with
scripting / programming, I first wrote a bash script to batch-uncompress another
set of multisampled instruments, available freely from the Hollow Sun Studios
(http://www.hollowsun.com/), and convert each map from Akai to rgc:audio's Sfz
format (waiting for the next LinuxSampler native format ,-). Sfz runs both
under Windows and Linux, by using either vstserver / vsti or fst / jack_fst,
and works, even if it isn't freesoftware (...)! This script has been
successfuly tested on my FC1 installation and on XP with Cygwin, even if the
latter solution won't work with a single operation (needs rebooting): Cygwin
still doesn't handle well RAM access (cannot fork...) and "for" loops aren't
that optimized for sure.
I'm not against giving a link to these early scripts, but I thought it was
better to wait for the next version.
As I'm a little picky on filenames aesthetics, my next step is to translate this
script into another language, in order to be able to parse HTML files to get
proper filenames included therein. I've been hesitating between Perl and Python
(as Frank Barknecht advised me before), because both are multi-platform and can
handle audio files, as required for the final project. Which one would best
suit? I've been programming easy student software in C/C++, if it can help.
Cheers,
Christian
I posted that message to the JACK list.
Anybody has the same problem?
sbdy at the JACK list said that it disappeared with kernel 2.6.10...
I have not tried this (I'll wait for the package) but I find it strange.

>I first though it was Ardour but then I realised that I could
reproduce it under XMMS with the jack plugin....
When running jackd and using audio applications, after some time (for
example 5minutes but not always the same time), I start listening a
strange noise added to the music, then it stops, it comes again later
but after a lot of time and like this until the end of the world.
>I have recorded this noise, recording the PCM output.
you can download it under the following link:
http://www.upcnet.es/~mvr9/proves/jack_bug.ogg
>note that the noise is not additive, it distorsionates the music
(during the silence between tracks you cannot listen it, even if it
started already in the previous track)
When I hear the noise, if I switch to the ALSA plugin, I can hear the
music OK; but if I switch again to jack it the noise continues. The
noise stops spontaneously after some time (1minute?) independently of
the fact that I listen to music or I don't play anything. When the noise
stops Jack displays in the message window: "**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at
least 0.058 msecs". This is normal?????
>Here there are some specs of my system:
I am running the last version of jackd under Debian testing: 0.99.0-2
with parameters (through qjackctl):
/usr/bin/jackd -R -p60 -t5000 -dalsa -dhw:0 -r44100 -p512 -n2 -S -i1 -o2
(short latency: 23.2ms)
with an audigy card, with a kernel 2.6.8 + realtime module
my fstab is the following one:

Anyone that can help me?
P.D: the music is from the album Wave of Antonio Carlos Jobim :)
