Hi,
I've been wondering: what is it like processing audio offline under
Linux? Is this something that is widely supported? I did a bunch of
google searches using the term "offline" but couldn't find anything
really useful.
My computer is fairly weak (800 MHz laptop, no DSP card). Currently, if
I want to process a file (apply effects, change the sample rate, apply
dithering, mix it with another file, etc. etc.), I get the best results
/ greatest efficiency if I do disk bounces that don't require real-time
processing. Steinberg seem to be very proud that they now support this,
which suggests that it isn't the norm, at least under Windows (I don't
think Logic ever supported it under Windows).
I'm also curious if there's general support to process MIDI offline as
well, but that's not so critical to me, since the computations are far
less intense.
Cheers,
Chris
The second major of version of Specimen has been released today. The
main change is the new sample editor that allows you to fine tune the
way your samples are being played. I've also created some
documentation, and added ping-pong and reverse play modes.
Download it from www.gazuga.net, and read up on it at
www.gazuga.net/guide.

Actually a new version was released on Sunday. Where did you hear about
the discontinuation?

Rox-filier's (http://rox.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/index.php/ROX-Filer
)Auto complete from the command line is pretty cool (I use it as an
image thumbnail viewer, its not so good as a full blow file manager as
it doesn't support multiple views). I don't usually use the command
input on xfe so I'm not going to be much help with that one.

That's just the main binary for fvwm. If you include all of the
modules I think it would put it up past icewm and maybe even past
fluxbox. My linux box is at home, but I'll check tonight.

Many thanks for all of these suggestions, and yes, Robin, if you would
be willing to share any config contributions I would be appreciative for
it. It's been awhile since I used WM's but maybe now's the time. App's
seem to work ok on it ok, and if I could configure a menu to get at them
quickly, then I would think I had found a solution.
Not to be a bandwidth hog here, but any comments on whether how
much cpu savings a person is going to see that can be given to audio?
No email at night so might have to comment back on any offerings
tomorrow. But thanks to all for sharing this info with me.
Thanks again,
gk
Make sure and not do what I was doing for a while, and confuse XFce
(which is a desktop like KDE and Gnome) and Xfe, which is a very very
nice X file manager.

Hi,
Ihave a yamaha rp-u200 usb "soundcard".
Nice,at the same time it is my hifi and surround-ampli
and my radio.
The capture-channel doesn'tb seem to work (normal?)
With alsa, one of the two playback-channels is working.
Not so bad....
But jack doesn't want to start with this device.
Is it that "real24bit"-problem for usb-cards?
Shouldn't it work?
Anyone knows about this?
When I start jack for this device I get the following output:
jackstart -Rv -d alsa -d hw:0,1 -r 44100
back from read, ret = 1 errno == Success
getting driver descriptor from /usr/lib/jack/jack_dummy.so

Sorry. The audio interface "hw:0,1" doesn't support any of the hardware sample formats that JACK's alsa-driver can use.
ALSA: cannot configure playback channel
cannot load driver module alsa
Thanks for help or comment.

What features are you looking for?
Basically if you tell us what you want your WM to do I think we could
probably set you on the right path :)

I knew i'd come back with more questions sooner or later...!
OK, here's my setup:
Debian
Kernel 2.4.22
Terratec DMX6 Fire (working properly with Alsa driver now - at least, i can
record with Audacity)
Evolution MC225C Midi controller (plugged into my Terratec Midi input)
My computer is a AMD 2400XP, 512 MB RAM
I have installed Muse as recommended by somebody and also Jack and when i
typed "jackstart --help" in the shell i got this (running as root)
jackstart: cannot get realtime capabilities, current capabilities are:
=ep cap_setpcap-ep
probably running under a kernel with capabilities disabled,
a suitable kernel would have printed something like "=eip"
I haven't installed Linux myself on my computer - a friend did it and
explained to me what he was doing while he was doing it but obviously, i
might not know everything about my setup. We installed it starting with
Knoppix then upgraded it to Debian. We tried to install the Kernel 2.6
afterwards but it doesn't boot, probably due to a video card error because
the screen actually goes blank even though i can hear the hard drive is
working.
So i have a couple of questions:
1) is there a quick fix for my jackstart problem with my current kernel?
2) should i upgrade to kernel 2.6?
Cheers
Rachel
