Subject: [ma-linux] Political action: Save Copyright From Hollywood
To: Ma linux <ma-linux(a)tux.org>
All,
This seems to be a good item for all of us to be aware of. It's not exactly
fair use, but close. It has to do with manufacturers of technologies and how
the users use those technologies. Please read.
Tim.
-----------------
An item you can pass around among your contacts. Visit
www.savebetamax.org.
Congress is considering a new law, known as the INDUCE Act, which
would radically change the standards of copyright. A national call-in
day is being organized for this coming Tuesday to fight this.
At present, a technology company which produces content copying tools
is protected from liability for what its users do with the tools. The
only requirement is that the tool is capable of a substantial
non-infringing use. Not that the users actually use it that way, but
just that the tool has the potential. This standard comes from the
Supreme Court "Betamax" decision, when Hollywood tried to kill the
first VCRs.
The new proposal would change the standard, to one based on how the
users actually do use the tool. While this seems reasonable on the
surface, it's a huge change for a potential defendant. It is easy,
and consequently cheap, to show that a tool could be used for a
non-infringing purpose. It is much harder to gather evidence about
how a tool is actually used in the real world.
The result is that under present law, a technology producer is
virtually immune from the threat of Hollywood action. That's why we
have things like iPOD, CD-RW and DVD-R, and USB thumb drives. Under
the new standard, Hollywood could cripple any new technology that
doesn't have the money to stand up to a multi-megabuck legal assault.
Spread the word, and get people to call their congress-critters. It's
important.

Yes, except that the realtime-lsm precompiled binary is not updated on Sid
each time the kernel is. The only way to keep it current is to compile it
yourself. Compiles quickly and reliably--just remember to copy the .ko to the
correct place and then reboot.
Every now and then i try to turn my linux box into an audio station.
I'm a musician and want to use band in a box.
I recently switched from mandrake to debian because i want to have a better
understanding/control on my system.
I use timidity as i don't own a midi sound card.
config (amd athlon 1.4 nv driver snd-ens1371)
dual boot->debian sarge(2.6.8 alsa debug+ preemption + voluntary_preemption
patch)
->mandrake 10.0 (2.6.3-15-mdk no preemption no patch besides mandrake
applied to its stock kernel. what patches? i don't know)
1.Band in a box (with wine)
Well my problem is that i cannot get the system (debian) to run band in a box
without cratches and glitches whereas it works flawlessly under mandrake!
I tried various patches and hints (http://www.affenbande.org/~tapas)
i still can't make it work.
I even tried to compile mandrake kernel source under debian but raised many
other pbs so i gave up..
So ok i stick on mandrake since it works there...
But since it does work with mdk i should be able to make it work on debian!
Helas not!
How comes it works on mandrake and not on debian?
Any hint anybody?
2. Jack realtime + realtime module + softsynth
Igualito, using jack + qsynth (or even timidity) turns out to be impossible
(thousands of xruns, crappy sound, sometimes X crashes )
when i use realtime the system(atically) crashes
thousands of xruns
mandrake or debian : it is pretty unusable.
I tried changing the IRQs from threaded to not threaded, changing the latency
with setpci, to no avail.
The only thing that improved the xruns a little is:
echo 16 > /sys/block/hda/queue/max_sectors_kb
If some of you managed to solve theis kind of problem (cheap soundcard, no
midi harware) i would like them to share their experience.
There is probably something i didn't or i did wrong!
Cheers
Eric

Is anyone aware of a Linux driver for the Midiman-- Winman 4x4/s
midi interface?
I have drivers for Win95 and Windows NT, but nothing for Linux. My
card is Version 1.04 Revision B, 1996.
Thanks All,
Stephen.
Hello,
They will not work with kernel 2.6 (unless you patch your kernel). If
>you intend to buy one of those: buy another one.
do you have any suggestions for devices if that is the case?
Also,
I'm going to run fedora core 1. Does that use the 2.6 kernel?

Off topic but for audio...
As I write this how to, it would be handy to be able to paste pics of
say...Qjackctl setup screen into a html page.
Any ideas what I can use instead of having to do an entire screen capture?
Thanks
Has anyone had a "good" experience installinga multiface with a Linux
laptop? I am ready to purchase a laptop and I am so skiddish of
realtime Linux laptop audio with a multiface that I am considering
purchasing a Mac. Any success stories with laptop model numbers would
be really great info here!
Thanks!

Greetings:
I've installed my new Delta 66, it seems to work fine, but I'd like to
get a little more control over it. My system sets up like so:
The SBLive driver is loaded during startup.
I manually load snd-virmidi and snd-ice1712.
I can use 'envy24control -c 2' to access the mixer for the 66.
But qjackctl displays alsa_pcm outputs only for the SBLive.
So my question is: can I start or configure qjackctl to show my
available audio ports from both the SBLive and the 66 ? If so, how ?
TIA!
Best,
dp
Hello,
Can any cheap PCI cards sample at 44k1 directly?
I don't care much about the quality; vinyl does not gove me cool quality
anyway. I could use an older card from the days when 44k1 was standard -
but I don't have an ISA slot.

Oh never mind. It only half works. It verified the checksum on my copy
then died with an error. The admin said they don't have the contents
of the .torrent files anymore and that there was 'no demand'. Sorry.
