if you want to measure audio files and not realtime
signals, you could use FScape
http://sourceforge.net/projects/fscape . There are two
modules : "Change Gain" has an info button that will
put out the peak and RMS of a file. Alternatively you
can use "Serial Killa" to make an energy analysis
which is a weighted sum of the spectral bands of a
file, using a coarse psychoacoustic weighting
function.
but honestly, better use your ears to match two
soundfiles for equal loudness!

I must say that i record onto an external firewire drive though, so this
might be an issue here...
The recordings seem ok, but i can only do a reconnect after restarting
jack. Any suggestions are very welcome!

Count me in, please. It looks like something I always wanted to do :)

hi, sorry to be miserable about this, but i cant read these articles right now, maybe theres a way to pass them to google somehow to decode to text for reading in links, or pipe thru some cmdline util, but seriously, PDF is not a 'libre' format last i checked....
just wanna check out the firewire article..to help decide between that and PCMCIA...
thanks, c
Hi Folks,
So, I have spouted off about a distro before (I know some of you checked
it out) and it was not as good as I hoped it would be! :(
Trust me...THIS is not the case this time!!!
Announcing PClinuxOS (PCLOS for short)
http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/
This is based on Mandrake but minus the bloat! One ISO built as a
LiveCD! You can boot it and not install...no commitment unless you want
to. The install is simple as can be and fast. KDE 3.4, Fluxbox, Gnome,
etc. The distro was started by Texstar who used to build packages for
Mandrake a few years ago.
So, whats that got to do with Music?? Just this; Thac has decided to
start packaging for PCLOS just as he has with Mandrake. For those not
familiar with his work...
http://rpm.nyvalls.se/sound10.1.html
I have relied on Thac's RPMS for audio since I started Linux audio work.
He keeps his packages updated and has about everything worth having in
his repositories. They have been invaluable to me.
As recently as yesterday, Thac has started his own 3rd party Apt
repository for PCLOS and as I write I am downloading the first of his
packages and new mm kernel, etc. We are chatting on the Pclinuxos IRC
chat room and ironing out a few minor bugs. It will be a few days before
he has all of his packages done.
Texstar suggested that we might make a liveCD with the key audio apps
and a R/T kernel for easy usage and evaluation. Obviously some time is
needed to work the bugs out but this is very likely in the not too
distant future! I should think those of you working with MDK right now
would see this as an easy step....others...well, the proof will be in
the pudding.
More soon....

Hello all,
I'm trying hard for weeks now to get a working sound configuration for
my new laptop. Finally, I'm totally frustrated now and hope to get some
help on this mailing list.
I have Linux experience since 2003 now, but never cared for sound (no
soundcard :-) -- My laptop has one, but doesn't run out of the box 100%.
Hardware: Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M1439G latop
Soundcard: Intel High Definition Audio (Realtek ALC880 chip)
Distribution: Mandriva 2006.0
Alsa version: 1.09b
Issues, I face at the moment:
- Sound works fine obviously (system sounds, mp3 etc.)
- My gnome-mixer or alsamixer do not have an master volume but internal
speaker only!
- Toggling volume doesn't effect XMMS at the moment, it continues
playing with the same loudness.
- I can't record anything in my microphones, both laptop internal and an
external one
Latest issue is very annoying, because I'm looking forward to have Skype
working in the future.
I found a little script called "aadebug" which intends to collect all
usefull information to debug the sound system. Here is the aadebug
output, I take good info out of it :-/

Correct my please if this mailing list is the correct location to place
my emergency request. That is my first ML subscription ever, so give
some feedback if I'm doing totally wrong here.
Also, I apologize for not so good english (I'm from Germany).
Don't hesitate to ask for more details, I'll deliver whatever you need
to get my sound working :-))
Thanks in advance,
Marcus
How does one start Swami (v0.9.2)?
All I did was log on, start it, and load one of my
soundfonts into it. I clicked keys and the mouse
across the virtual keyboard, but I don't hear
anything.
I haven't changed any settings since the last time I
ran either timidity with a loaded soundfont, or any
other sound app., in which I can hear something
happening.
What did I leave out? Do I have to start jackd or
qjackctl?
Please help!
Thanks,
Mark
