I bought a recycled HP x4000 Workstation with dual Intel Xeon
processors and Intel 860 Chipset. (Came with no manuals or any
software.)
It has both 32bit PCI slots and 64bit PCI slots.
Is this a 64bit system? Or is it a 32bit system with some 64bit PCI
slots?
I'm currently using an SMP 32bit kernel with DeMuDi to utilize the
full capability of this workstation. Could I be using a 64bit SMP
kernel instead? And if so, where would I find such a kernel?
Thank you,
Stephen.
Hi, I'd like to record about 6-8 hours of one channel, very low
fidelity sound. I'll be recording silence, punctuated by sound.
It'd be even better if rather than recording that much silence, that
the recorder would only record to hard drive when there was sound
present. What recording software would be good for either task?
Thanks!

Hi everyone,
I'm getting ready to release a new version of WhySynth. If
you have saved any good WhySynth (or Xsynth-DSSI) patch
presets, and want to be immortalized via their inclusion in the
the new WhySynth default patch set, please email them to me.
Thanks,
-Sean
At last I figured this out, so I thought I'd share it.
My setup is as follows: a terratec ews88mt, a BCF2000, and an evolution
eKeys 49 midi keyboard. kernel 2.6.14, Gentoo.
The following is a section from my /etc/modules.d/alsa (which ultimately
ends up in /etc/modules.conf). The BCF2000 is always card 2 (in
/proc/asound/cards) corresponding to /dev/snd/midiC2D0, the keyboard is
always card 3 corresponding to /dev/snd/midiC3D0. This remains constant
even if they aren't switched on when alsa starts, or if I switch the
devices off and on.
# 1) ews88mt
alias snd-card-0 snd-ice1712
options snd-ice1712 index=0
# 2) virtual midi for softsynth and routing
alias snd-card-1 snd-virmidi
options snd-virmidi index=1
# 3) bcf2000
alias snd-card-2 snd-usb-audio
options snd-usb-audio index=2 vid=0x1397 pid=0x00bc
# 4) evolution keyboard
alias snd-card-3 snd-usb-audio
options snd-usb-audio index=3 vid=0x0a4d pid=0x0090
#Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=4
The key to this is the vid (Vendor id) and pid (product id) parameters
for snd-usb-audio. Which in usb-speak are idVendor and idProduct,
respectively. The values for these can be found using lsusb -v, which on
my system gives the following:
Bus 001 Device 011: ID 1397:00bc
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 1.10
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
bDeviceSubClass 0
bDeviceProtocol 0
bMaxPacketSize0 64
idVendor 0x1397
idProduct 0x00bc
bcdDevice 1.00
iManufacturer 1 BEHRINGER
iProduct 2 BCF2000
and
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 0a4d:0090 Evolution Electronics, Ltd
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 1.00
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
bDeviceSubClass 0
bDeviceProtocol 0
bMaxPacketSize0 64
idVendor 0x0a4d Evolution Electronics, Ltd
idProduct 0x0090
bcdDevice 1.22

I hope someone finds this useful.

hi there
after I've showed some linux audio applications to a friend of my, he
wants to build a box running sooperlooper, ardour and some
ladspa-plugins. the question is, if the audio-hardware will fit?
It is about this usb audio-, midi-combo m-audio ozone
http://www.midiman.de/ozone.htm
on the m-audio-web-page they say it will run under linux but it is
actually not listed on the alsa-soudcard-matrix. can pleas somebody
tell me if it is partly (midi/audio) or completely working?
since latency is a important issue for a live-tool, what can he expect
with usb-audio?
thanks for any input

Hi list, I'm thinking about getting some decent monitoring for mycomputer. I read good things about Bluesky mediadesk 2.1. $500 orless is what i'm looking at. The Samson ribbon monitors also lookinteresting but bass-lacking. Basically I'm interested in somethingaccurate and flat. I use low end a lot, but I don't like the XTREMEBASS SUBZ you find in most consumer equipment.so what are you using, what for? anything else I should know?
Do any of you emu10k1 people know how to listen to the
synth channel of the alsa mixer through the rear
speaker jack?
How about stereo capture in jack from the aux input
channel?
there has to be a simple way...
Does anybody have the Creative Labs Sound Blaster
Live! External USB Sound Card (Model: SB0490) working
with Linux/alsa?
How is the performance? Was it difficult to install
and setup? What audio software do you use with it?
I am thinking about getting one.

I was missing something, not you! ;-) (my statement wasn't clearly
enounced at all).
My idea was to run macos/ppc VST plugins on linux/x86. And not that I
want to run that, but I thought it could be an easier way to be able to
use some vst plugin in linux than running a win32/x86 VST plugin on a
linux/x86 system. But as you mention, it is insane... (as a damn simple
user without lots of knowlegde about these issues, I thought that linux
was "closer" to macos (because unix based) as win.)
Thank's for the answers (if I won't be able this idea, I have at least
improve my knowledge!).
