I don't think I understand this jackplug concept.
I'm trying to get an alsa client, such as aplay to play through jackd.
I've setup jackplug in /etc/asound.conf

I then tell aplay to use:
#aplay -d jackplug foobar.wav
But aplay plays the file even if jackd is not started; why?. Isn't
jackplug supposed to show up in my jack connections when aplay is
playing?
I seem to be missing something vital.
Is there some way to make a "fake audio device", like hw:3,0 that alsa
applications can connect to so that I can get the audio out and then
send it through jack, process it and then send it to the real audio
device?

There are a few alternatives. Not much that I have on Windows or Linux support
clock messages. MagicBaton was a MIDI-player that added events based on the
mouse-conducting.
Alternatives:
1. Run the Boa in Parallel with whatever sequencer or player is going through
jack or such. Boa would then put out simply omni/overall level and tempo
events.
2. Run Boa as a plug-in Rosegarten, Muse or other such program. In this case,
it would work on one track/channel and insert expression (and tempos) or in
an omni mode as above. For rehearsing (MagitBaton's parlance) one track, one
would probably want to disable tempo changes and conduct expression.
Omin/overall would do level and tempo.
3. Controlling another software via midi-clock and some volume control device.
This assume, naturally, that this software is available :-)

Something about amixer's control of the HDSP Multiface has changed. And,
I can't seem to hack how to fix things. Please help!
I used to use the simple bash script (as published in Linux Journal)

for i in $(seq 1 18);do
amixer cset name=Chn,index=$i 32768
done
to set all the channels to unity, but this script no longer works. I
get:
amixer: Control default cinfo error: No such file or directory
Meanwhile, my hdsp is definitely clipping and I can't quite tell where
to tweak it.
alsamixer is also no longer available, gives an error:
No mixer elems found
This is with Fedora 3, so alsa 1.0.6 and the alsa-firmware tools
(hdsploader, hdspconfig, hdspmixer).
PS: hdspmixer is not accessible to me because I need an eyes-free
interface.
I suppose knowing where/how to tweak the hdspmixer default presets might
do it??

I just got an Echo Indigo IO card. It works (and I like it a lot so
far), but alsamixer's sliders are all mixed up. Left channel over
here, corresponding right channel way over there on the other page,
etc. After I figure out what each one does, can I submit a bug report
somewhere and have them rearranged and labeled better?
I bought a Delta 1010, which works very well. But there's one strange
thing:
I let the system running the whole day and, when i came back home this
evening, the power LED on the 1010 was turned off and the card was not
passing any signal in or out. The OS was seeing it, i was able to run
envy24control, but couldn't hear anything. Rebooting the system didn't
help.
After power-cycling the system, the card works fine again.
Cause? Remedy?
Also, is your card running hot like mine does? (epecially the left-hand
side of the box)

So my US428 was working pretty well on my rackmount computer, but
with that motherboard fried, I'm now back to using my laptop. For
some reason my US428 doesn't like my laptop very much. One thing
that seemed to be a problem was that here was some sort of
qjackctl conflict with the non-multithreaded QT libs, so I
installed the multithreaded ones, recompiled, and at least my
computer is no longer crashing whenever I start start jackd from
qjackctl with my us428. However, I'm getting more xruns than I
think I should, and it might be beacuse I think I'm not using the
rawusb mode. Seems that I need to use -dhw0,2 to use rawusb mode,
but when I try that, I get
ALSA/USX2Y: Cannot open hwdep device "hw:0,1"
It should be located at hw:0,0, I think, but I'm not sure how to
specify that. Any ideas?

I'm trying to configure a joystick so I can use it as an Mplayer
transport control.
The first complication is that the actual machine that I need to use
it on has no gameport for its onboard soundcard. Under the
assumption that I can add an adapter card with a gameport (an
inexpensive pci soundcard or gameport adapter card) I proceeded to
test a previously untested second hand joystick for functionality
and linux compatibility on a secondary machine that does have a
gameport.
The primary box (no gameport) runs FC2, a 2.6 kernel with ALSA. The
secondary box runs RH 9 with alsa added on through Planet CCRMA, the
soundcard is a yamaha (ymf701 I think) which uses the snd-ymfpci
module. The joystick is a Gravis Blackhawk. Having failed to get
the input device detected (jstest /dev/js0) under linux I resorted
to windoze and managed to test and calibrate it as a Gravis Analog
Pro device, so I am fairly sure that it's the analog flavor of
Blackhawk.
In reading some ALSA docs I found that the gameport needs to be
enabled at the alsa soundcard module's compile time but I have no
idea how to check whether it is enabled in the module. Beyond that
I'm not sure which modules need to be loaded. My impression is that
joydev and maybe analog are the relevant modules but I'd appreciate
any tips or further info.
