Hi,
I recently did a "MIDI linux box". A Suse installed on a minimal hardware
configuration. There is everything needed to transform MIDI events in to
beautiful sounds with Fluidsynth (I use a SB live).
Everything works fine with my Terratec TMS3 MIDI keyboard, but I have to use
this linux box with a Technics keyboard (something like this
http://www.technics.com/pc25.html) in my music group. And there, no MIDI
events are coming to fluidsynth ...... samething with an old MIDI keyboard,
but this old keyboard can receive the Technics MIDI events and play them ! so
the Technics ports are not broken ...
Is there to 2 version of the MIDI protocol ?!? somebody already got this ??
Best regards,
Gilles

I've got a 512 DSL. Heath was on a lan line and stated
that the hotel probably had t1 bandwidth. I don't
really know but would guess the hotel uses a DSL line.
I've tested with a couple other people where they had
cable and another DSL. In both cases the performance
is excellent. I think the server is running at '-q 0'
which is the lowest quality but Heath stated that it
sounded real good.
Oh, and one of my roommates was streaming semipro
hockey over the line while we running our studio
session. Not bad!
I'll be doing some tracking work with my studio
partner Dana. He's on a cable modem. He can stream a
sequence which I can then overdub drums to or vice
versa. I suppose we could put several streams into a
series. Afterwards we can use SEX to update our Ardour
snapshots with the .wav files.
This isn't exactly what's been discussed here in the
last week but I suppose it's proof of concept. And if
it isn't good enough we're all free to purchase that
$1,500.00 ProFools module that does the same thing. :)

Hey,
One of my clients, Heath from St. Louis MI. USA, and I
have just completed a realtime mixing session over the
internet. He mailed me a HDD with 12 songs that need
to be mixed and mastered. I live a couple states North
in Minneapolis, MN where my business partners and I
have been running our commercial recording studio for
20 years.
Heath was in a motel room in Boston, Massachusetts
listening to a live Ogg Vorbis stream from the stereo
master output of my mixing consol on a Windows laptop
using Winamp. Here's a short snippet from our
conversation:
<heath> yeah. can i hear the back vox up a little
more?
<rparker> sure
...
<heath> going into the solo the lead gtr can probably
come through more still. unless you think it crowds
it
<rparker> one sec
<heath> i'm happy with the vox
This is a JACKD, Ardour session using Icecast and the
oddcastv3-jack module to realtime stream the session
onto the internet over a DSL connection. When Heath
requests a change, I make the mix moves, he hears the
results and confirms whether or not they are
acceptable. We're using IRC for the live chat.
This is a commercial session and Heath is paying me to
work on his band's music. Technical problems or
excuses of any kind are unaccpetable. On the server
side, at the studio, the setup is peforming rock solid
without any technical problems.
I don't know about anyone else but for an old dawg
like me Linux Audio is great stuff. A big thank you to
the developers and users.

I bought a Delta 1010, which works very well. But there's one strange
thing:
I let the system running the whole day and, when i came back home this
evening, the power LED on the 1010 was turned off and the card was not
passing any signal in or out. The OS was seeing it, i was able to run
envy24control, but couldn't hear anything. Rebooting the system didn't
help.
After power-cycling the system, the card works fine again.
Cause? Remedy?
Also, is your card running hot like mine does? (epecially the left-hand
side of the box)

Has anyone heard what happened to www.csounds.com? I
couldn't get it to come up yesterday or today.

the mailing something to yourself to prove creation date technique, or "poor
man's copyright", seems to have, at least in most Berne Convention countries,
very little purpose.
see http://www.copyrightauthority.com/poor-mans-copyright/ for a fair
elaboration. of course, different rules for different countries.

Hi! I'm running Rosegarden for the first time, everything works, it
connects with Jack but I've a problem: it seems to ignore note-off
messages from my Access Indigo 2 (that I'm using as master keyboard
also). Rosegarden must be the problem beacause if I quit it and connect
everything directly with Qjackctl...IT WORKS ! I've checked but no midi
message is filtered by Rosegarden, so...I've no idea. Any advice or
idea?

Dear list,
Could anyone who has used both of the above pieces of software give a
brief comparison, or point to an appropriate url? Aside from the fact
that OM is graphical, what are the functional differences? Which offers
the broadest range of features, and which is more widely used/better
supported?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, as I don't particularly want
to install and learn both just to find out which I prefer!
Thanks,
Jamie
Hello list-o-mine,
I am trying to fill in some holes in my knowledge of linux and of audio
mixing techniques. I was wondering if you might help me oh multi-headed
hydra?
First I am trying to figure out compression. In PD I am using a
[limiter~] object and passing to that object a limit of 98db, ratio of
1:1.5, threshold of 10, hold time of 50, and release time of 150. Most
everything is too quiet so I plan to just turn everything up linierly
and the peaks will get compressed. I know this is a hotly debated
subject as no compression would be ideal, but can you give me perhaps
three examples of some settings you use for (example 3 types of
settings): pop music, classical or performance levels, and some middle
ground? Do you use both a compressor and expander? If so what order.
Before you publish a track, either on CD or on the net, how do you
insure someone else wont put their name on your track and take credit
for it?
I am having trouble getting audacity to find my audio devices on my
x86_64 Fedora Core 3t1 hdsp hammerfall multiface laptop. Anyone else
have this problem and solve it? The audacity people haven\'t gotten
back to me yet.
Can someone give me an example of sox\'s compand effect? I can\'t
figure out the syntax.
Lastly, I always thought a linux distro was just a system of file
arranging: e.x. every config file somewhere in /etc for redhat/fedora
core. What is the difference between distros besides initial setup
stuff (like redhat comes with a lot turned on, but you can turn stuff
off and be just like gentoo, right)?
Thanks for the help, now and for as long as I have been drawing upon
your vast and distributed knowledge!

Hi,
first of all, sorry for the cross posting, but I thought the
topic is worth it.
Again, this year the Linuxtag will happen in Karlsruhe,
Germany. It's Europe's most important event concerning free,
especially Linux based software.
During the last years, Frank Neumann has politely organized an
audio booth there. Unfortunately, it can happen that he'll
not be able to do all management stuff this year again.
So, I'll try my very best to help out this year, otherwise we
wouldn't have a booth.
We're still looking for people who are interested in helping,
mainly being at the booth, answering questions and demoing
software.
If you like to contribute, please let me know. For detailed
information about the Linuxtag see
http://www.linuxtag.org/2005/en/home.html
or contact me via personal mail.
Best regards
