Thanks for that.
If software installs into my home directory instead is that a sign of something horrible happening, or am I OK simply copying the application across to /usr/local/bin and carrying on as normal? I take it putting my home directory in the system path is not the way forward, on security grounds.
I was also wondering about editing the system path. From what I can gather from a cursory google the system path can be edited temporarily to affect a specific shell, or system-wide. The files that I've seen mentioned in this context are:
/etc/login.defs
/home/tom/.bashrc
/home/tom/.bash_profile
login.defs has 2 lines in it that seem to specify the system path (normal and su), but when I edit the line for the normal user and do echo $PATH there's no change to the system path.
Any thoughts?
Cheers, Tom

I am not sure if this a correct place to ask, but here we go..
When connecting my 5.1 -headphones (Kasaku) to Audigy 2 ZS and setting
up Xine to use 5.1 output, something gets wrong since I can't hear the
speech/dialog, which means the center channel(?)
Cranked up all the channels via alsamixer too.
Anyone else struggling with same problem and even resolved it?
Hi,
This is the release candidate in the release cycle of the coming 2.8.0
release of NoteEdit.
If you still find bugs post them in the Bug tracker. or mail them to the
developer mailing list.
Known bugs can be found in the Bug tracker as well.
Since now, we were successfully maintaining the original English, German
(most of NE developers), Slovenian (myself) and Slovakian (Zdenko
Podobný) translation. However, we did not recieve any progress report or
confirmation about the translations to other languages.
Let me remind you that the deadline to commit the translation files is
on Sunday, 12th June 2005, 23:59 CET.
Translations not being sent until Sunday will not make it to the stable
2.8.0 version.
Please contact us immediately if you're making or going to make the
translation work for your language. If we won't recieve a confirmation
within 48 hours, we will assume that this message didn't reach
you and we'll start to search for another translators.
If you want to start a new translation for NoteEdit in your language
we would be happy if you contact us as well. The best way to contact
us is our team's development mailing list (noteedit-devel(a)berlios.de).

Hello!
Finally I've found some time and coded a small wrapper (based on
artsdsp) to hear the sound from Enemy Territory on my Delta66.
Actually it routes the sound through JACK, so it may be useful not
only for poor Envy24 users :)
I hope it should work for all Quake3-based games.
Feel free to try it out and send your comments.
Hope it'll help somebody besides me.

Hi all,
newbie alert:
I'm looking for some basic info about the system path, e.g. what its for, how it relates to read/write/execute privileges for directories, and tips on what to do/not to do - particularly in terms of installing and running applications.
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi list.
I've taken a break from sequenced music for several years, during which
I changed OS from Windows to GNU/Linux and acquired an older laptop as
an upgrade from my geriatric desktop. Now I'm getting "the call" to
return to it, so I have the fun task of finding a new way for me to
write music!
I'm finding myself trying to recreate the way I used to do it, which
consisted of using a MIDI loop sequencer for my hardware sampler and
synthesisers, recording sequenced loops into the PC, munging them with
cool plugins and setting up loop points etc, exporting them to my
sampler, then arranging using a MIDI sequencer and my sampler.
But having read about the wonders of Jack, and playing briefly with a
few Jack-ed apps, I've come to suspect that I will have more fun and
get more done by exploring some alternative toolchains ;-)
The main problem I am having is that there is just so much info to trawl
through and so many apps! Can anyone recommend something stable that
could function as a jack-connected sampler player, and something else
stable that could function as a regular MIDI sequencer and/or MIDI
loop/drum sequencer for my external synths?
The other thing plaguing me is that the sound card in my laptop is
complete rubbish (Neomagic AC97 thingy) and I'd like to get something
external to pipe the audio from my hardware synths in, any suggestions
on something USB or PCMCIA and well-supported with good latency? I
would only use stereo.
Thanks for any and all advice!

How's this relate to open audio? I know lot's of linux app's now use xml
for config files. Now office app's will have xml data files. I find this
real interesting.
quote from BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4603539.stm
Microsoft adopts web file styles
Microsoft is putting a key web technology at the heart of its most popular programs.
By late 2006 all the files created by users of its Office suite of software will be
formatted with web-centred XML specifications.
The decision marks a big change to Microsoft's existing proprietary file formats
that can be hard to work with.
Microsoft said the changes should make it much easier for companies to do more
business via the web.

Hello list!
I was just wondering if anyone has fooled around with the
motorola A780 cell w/ linux OS andd linux audio? It
apparently has a usb port would would make it cool to use
to do field recordings (via usb perhaps), or do simple PD
stuff. Or stream video or something.
Just curious...
Thanks for any info!
