Recently I posted my tune 'Antartica' on KVR (not mentioned here
because it had no connection at all with Linux) and when someone
commented that one instrument was too loud, I thought he was right so
decided to do a remix.
To my horror I could find no trace of the build files, not even
searching back more than two years of backup CDs, after the usual
tantrums, swearing and pulling the house apart (no chair throwing
though). I had the bright idea of firing up my ancient Acorn machine,
which to my surprise and delight came up without problems. There was my
original MIDI file from 1993.
This was of course quite a lot different from later versions, but was
complete enough for me to recreate the track. However, I felt free to
be more adventurous both with the tune itself, and the instruments.
It is now about 70% ZynAddSubFX, 20% SY35 & 10% Sound Canvas and all
the editing was done in Rosegarden so is proudly 'music made with
linux' :)
I would greatly appreciate some feedback, even if it's just to say I
wasted my time and should have left the old machine in peace.

Hey, I think I've finally got the hang of these URLs :)

WARNING: this is harsh and pretty much unlistenable-- and certainly unmusical--, but I find it hilariously funny:
http://www.restivo.org/misc/moltar-atrocity-0.1.ogg
I modified a PD sample-mangling patch, attached MIDI CC's to some of its parameters, loaded it up with a sample from a classic "Space Ghost" episode, and spent a few minutes of gleeful insanity tweaking MIDI faders.
Not only is it a sonic atrocity, but it's also a legal atrocity: there's no way I'd ever be able to clear the rights to this from Cartoon Network, so I'll take this down after a few days.
Serious question: what do y'all do about the 1980's-era idiocy of MIDI, in that it only has 127 steps in its CC's (sheesh, not even a lousy byte!). Do you burn two controllers with fine/coarse adjustments? If so, how do you determine the scale for fine and/or coarse?

I have used midi on Windows with Gigastudio and understand how to get
it working. I would like to use my .gig files on Linux because I am
afraid of another crash due to Gigastudio and I cannot afford to due
another Windows install and then reinstall all of my software.
The questions that I have is how to get qjackctl to get the midi
signal from my TMK-88 midi controller and route them to Linux Sampler.
A couple of questions are:
-How can you tell if qjackctl is receiving a midi signal from your keyboard?
-Is there anyway to tell if qjackctl is sending an output signal?
-How do I setup qjackctl and run it out to Linux Sampler? I have a
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Ex Platinum sound card.
I don't understand how to use qjackctl or Linux Sampler? Thanks.

I had avoided PD for a long time because I don't like clicky-draggy things, and prefer working with text.
Bah, what was I thinking??! PD is tight! Fast, simple, and it works. I love it.
Many thanks to whomever pointed me at PD. I had been banging my head against the wall, trying to figure out how to build MIDI-controlled instruments in SC/ChucK/Csound-- and it turned out to be trivially easy in PD. There was some sample code, I modified it, and here we are:

I also had avoided dealing with seq24 for a long time, but now after having used it for a few tunes, I like it a lot.
(Hydrogen, PHASEX, AZR3, and fluidsynth were also used on this tune)

Hi all,
we are developing Podcast support for Aqualung[1].
At present it is working well for RSS feeds, but we
would like to achieve compatibility with Atom feeds
as well. The problem is, we cannot seem to find
some good feeds we could test for compatibility;
everyone seems to provide their feeds in RSS.
So, can anyone provide some popular (or not)
feeds that use the Atom syndication format?
Thanks,
Tom

anyone know of a way to find out what could be interfering with my soundcards
and causing substantial clicks every now and then? when i playback tone i
see them maybe 3 or 4 every 5 minutes. i have 3 c-ports running as one 30
channel array, tho it's the same with just one card, using alsa 1.0.14, jack
103 (tried 107 too) SMP 22.1-rt9 kernel, 3800+ x2. weird thing is my custom
gentoo build does this but musix "live" doesn't. any thoughts ? i've set my
priorities and tried every combination of changes ( smp/up/rt/no rt/i can
think of but to no avail. it record fine, but when duplexing it clicks.
best,
g.
Greetings,
As some of you know, my hometown (Findlay OH) was hit by rather severe
weather recently, including some impressive floods. I escaped any
serious damage, but my garage and utility room were flooded. The water
came up to my doorstep and stopped, thankfully, so the main dwelling
space was untouched. All my gear is safe and intact.
A large storage facility is near my house, and almost everything in the
sheds has been thrown out and piled by the streets for trash pickup.
When I walked by the piles this morning I noticed a case with a "Rhodes
Instrument" label. I opened it, it's a mini-Rhodes, and other than the
water damage it appears to in good condition. I packed it into my truck,
and now I own a mini-Rhodes that needs cleaned and possibly repaired.
So, how should I clean this thing ? My thought is to simply open it up
and hose it down to get any crap out of its box, then I'll let it dry
and try firing it up to see if it works. Any other advice or suggestions
for this project ?
Btw, if I get it working I'll sell it locally. It's too heavy to ship,
it reminds of my bad old band days when we carted a B3 and a full-sized
Rhodes. I admit to missing the great sounds from those instruments, but
my back won't bear the strain these days. ;-)
Best,
dp
I havn't seen Horgand before, but built it on Fedora 7, using the default Alsa
audio out. It launched with no problems, but when playing keys on my usb midi
keyboard, I was getting something that sounded like xruns. I've left it a
couple of days, and had a few updates for Fedora 7. I launched Horgand again,
still heard what appear to be xruns, and decided to change the audio output
to Jack. Bad move!!!. I can no longer launch Horgand. I tried a bunch of
stuff. A make uninstall, and removing stuff that was left behind,
(~/.horgand, and an empty directory in /usr/local/share, followed by a make
install. Still no launch of the app. next I removed the directory created
from unpacking the tarball, and recreated the directory. Then did
a ./configure, make, and make install again. Still nothing. It appears that
I've killed it by trying to get it to use Jack.
I'm not giving up, so I boot up Debian Etch on the same machine. Build Horgand
on Etch, setup the desktop launcher, and it's nice that there is an icon for
Horgand, and a nice one too. I launch it, and it opens just fine, but I'm
getting these same sort of xrun sounds when playing it. Shut it down, and
launch it from a terminal. 2 lines are printed, followed by continual lines
of xruns!, and I havn't touched a key on the keyboard, and the keyboard isn't
even connected in Qjackctl's midi connections.
I havn't tried changing the audio out to Jack, as I don't want to screw up
Horgand on Etch, as changing to Jack on Fedora 7 seems to have done. Doh!
Any suggestions to resolve the xrun problem? This seems like a nice app, and
it would be nice to get it working well.
Best regards.
Nigel.
Hi all ....
For the people who can run horgand in ALSA but not in jack .... please
re-download, hope the bug is fixed.
The problem was allocating memory for XWMHints ... to mask the window icon
for transparency ... seems that when jack is running ( in non real time )
libpxm hints var need to be declared as static .... of course I will never
understand why :-)
Thanks to all
Josep
Mine gives me:
horgand 1.11 - Copyright (c) 2003-2007 Josep Andreu (Holborn)
Try 'horgand --help' for command-line options.
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/david/.horgand': File exists
cannot open audio device plughw:0,0
It is easy enough to get rid of the directory which only contains some
samples. However, best practice is to test for existance first and create
only if need be.
However, the second error disables the program. Jack is running fine but there
is no "plughw:0,0". Just hw:0 and hw:1 with 0,0 variants in the qjackctl
setup.
1.07 works fine.
