I'm trying to track down such things, but nobody locally even seems to
have heard of MIDI, let alone USB-MIDI ...
Also, how many would I need? My one external MIDI device is a Yamaha
PSR-225GM keyboard, with what looks like the usual MIDI IN, OUT and
THROUGH ports. I also have occasional access to a Yamaha PSR-740, which
has additional programmable controllers. It has a similar collection of
MIDI ports.
I'd like to set things up so I could input from the keyboard(s) and also
output to the keyboards.

Emu XMidi 1x1 is a nice cheap 1 in 1 out USB to Midi cable. Works
perfectly in Linux.

That looks rather good...

And Python, too! Now I really am excited. I love Python - I have a
textbook coming out in the Autumn/Spring, plug plug :)

Yes, although it left me dazed until about February !

I love your beats.
Just listened to Meteors versus Dinosaurs.
Have you got more? Overall, the track wasn't quite right for me - not
easy enough to listen to - but I'm guessing that i'd love your more
restrained stuff if you have any.

jack_mixer version 6 "Dance of the headless corpse" released.
jack_mixer is GTK (2.x) JACK audio mixer with look similar to it`s
hardware counterparts. It has lot of useful features, apart from being
able to mix multiple JACK audio streams.
Changes since version 5:
* Fix building against jack 0.102.20
* Handle python prefix different from install prefix
* Fix LASH-less operation
* Update install instructions after lash-0.5.3 and phat-0.4.1 releases
* Apply Markus patch (thanks!) for sr #1698 (can't restore session using LASH)

Hi List,
Recently I've been using SuperCollider a lot but one problem I'm having is
that it's hard to audition samples while JACK is running. I was wondering
if there's a graphical JACK app with a file browser which allows one to
easily hear samples (preferably just by clicking once on them) and to copy
their path (so I can then paste it into SuperCollider if I want to use that
sample).
I'm guessing these features are likely to appear in the open file dialogue
of something like a simple sample editor, but it seemed easier to ask the
list than to go through every such application and see if it has the ability
to quickly audition samples (I don't want to have to load each one into the
sample editor first as I want to be able to quickly compare several samples
- I'm looking for a file dialogue with a "play" function that doesn't close
the dialogue). IIRC Ardour can do this but it seems a bit of a heavyweight
app just to audition samples.
Or alternatively, if there's a little command-line jack sample player (like
aplay except that it can be used while JACK is running) I could use that
instead.
Thanks in advance,
Nathaniel
I'm resending this mail (something is very wrong somewhere). Sorry if
anybody got a duplicate.
a2jmidid is daemon for exposing legacy ALSA sequencer applications in
JACK MIDI system. It is based on jack-alsamidi-0.5 (jackd alsa seq midi
backend) by Dmitry Baikov. The main purpose is to ease usage of legacy,
not JACK-ified apps, in JACK MIDI enabled systems.
It is tested, and works, here, with current SVN jack. ATM it may or may
not work with other variants.
Planned features/improvements:
* One JACK client per ALSA sequencer client
* Improved build system (autotools) and support (better handling) for
other JACK variants (older MIDI API variants, jackdmp)
* More control on what ports to bridge (currently bridging is fixed to
non-hardware ports).
* Real daemonization with log file, init.d script, etc.
If someone wants to contribute please, contact me, or send patches, or
request inclusion (Gna! a2jmidid project). As usual, packagers are more
than welcome too.

This is probably something easy, but it's got me stumped. I'm running
64Studio (32-bit i386 version), M-Audio Delta44 and internal AC'97
soundcards. I want to use the Delta44, but the two cards seem to pick
their ALSA assignments at random - one time the Delta44 will be hw:0 and
the AC'97 will be hw:1, and the next time I start up they'll be
reversed. Any suggestions as to how to make them each pick an assignment
and stay with it?
Thanks,
Steve

For this exact situation I just configured my file manager (Worker) to
play a selected file with mplayer when I press ctrl-m.

Hi all,
I haven't posted here for some time now. I've been busy at work, but finally, I have a linux box together that works again... It's a long story.
Still, I have a problem. When I started jack on the first lone soundcard, it worked fine. However, I've added a second card, and now I'm having problems starting jack on either of them.
The machine is an Athlon64 3200 on an nForce4 board. I'm running an up-to-date Planet CCRMA on Fedora Core 6. The first soundcard (that did work in this machine) is an RME DIGI9636, and the second is an RME 96/8 PAD.
Both cards are second-hand, but I have seen each of them working before - the DIGI9636 was used previously with FC3 a year ago, and the 96/8 PAD was working in a Windows machine earlier today.
I'm using qjackctl. Here is an excerpt of the messages as I attempt to start jack on the DIGI9636:
